Davey, Secretary & CEO Frank DePaola, Highway Division Administrator Ongoing Work in the MHS Tunnels May 31, 2013 To follow is a summary of maintenance and construction activities performed last week in the Metropolitan Highway System tunnels. Please feel free to contact me if you need additional information. Overnight work: • • • • • • • • • After a contractor milled and paved the Copley Square Exit (Exit 22) from the Prudential Tunnel Eastbound, the contractor is now in the process of installing elastomeric concrete, an elastic grouting product, around the roadway drain inlets. A contractor is doing preparatory work for roadway repairs in the Ted Williams Tunnel (both directions). The roadway repairs are necessary because of water infiltration. Preliminary work includes soundings of the concrete to determine the affected areas of the roadway. Contractors are also repairing water infiltration at multiple points within the O’Neill Tunnel (both directions) and on related ramps. Recent work has concentrated on the Northbound side of the tunnel. While the contractor repairs areas on the Northbound side, another contracting crew is in the area performing a routine inspection. A contractor is performing routine inspections of the I-93 Northbound Tunnel, the I-93 Southbound Tunnel, a portion of the Zakim Bridge, the I-90 Connector Tunnel (both directions) and the Prudential Tunnel Eastbound. A contractor is also inspecting the HOV Tunnel. The contractor is finishing the inspection of the Westbound Connector Tunnel. MassDOT workers washed the Ted Williams Tunnel Eastbound in advance of the Memorial Day weekend. A private contractor, working on behalf of Boston Properties, the owner of the Prudential Center, is continuing ceiling repairs in the Prudential Tunnel Westbound. A contractor is continuing to pull-test the ceiling anchors in the Ted Williams Tunnel (both directions). The contractor has begun installation of a supplemental ceiling hanger system. The contractor is also making any necessary adjustments to the installed supplemental hangers. MassDOT electricians replaced four cases of bulbs in the Prudential Tunnel Westbound. MassDOT bridge inspectors inspected the bridges at the entrance and exit to the Callahan Tunnel. The inspections required a lane closure in the Callahan. • • • The MassDOT environmental section changed the filter screens in pump stations within the Sumner Tunnel. MassDOT electricians and millwrights installed a new building ventilation fan in a fan room in the Westbound Prudential Tunnel. Substructure repair work in the Storrow Tunnel Westbound has resumed after a winter layoff. Recent work includes installation of wiring for the new lighting system, curb grouting and sidewalk installation.
