MEMORANDUM TO: FR: RE: DA: Richard A. Davey, Secretary & CEO Frank DePaola, Highway Division Administrator Ongoing Work in the MHS Tunnels February 10, 2012 To follow is a summary of maintenance and construction activities performed last week in the Metropolitan Highway System tunnels. Please feel free to contact me if you need additional information. Overnight work: • • • • • • • • • • Contractors continued tunnel joint repairs in the area of Ramp R-T, linking Essex Street to I-93 Northbound. Eight joints in this area require repairs. Contractors worked on two tunnel joints last week. The work is part of MassDOT’s ongoing efforts to repair water infiltration. Work has also begun on tunnel joints on nearby Ramp A-CN. MassDOT finished repairs to a tunnel joint in the area of Ramp ST-CN, linking the Sumner Tunnel to I-93 Northbound. This is also part of MassDOT’s ongoing efforts to repair water infiltration. Additional water infiltration repair work is occurring at Ramp CN-S, near Exit 26 from I-93 Northbound, Ramp SA-CS (Surface Artery Southbound to I-93 Southbound) and SA-CT (Surface Artery Southbound to Callahan Tunnel). MassDOT is continued removal of delaminated concrete in the Storrow Drive Westbound Tunnel. The delaminated concrete was removed and new concrete poured in its place. Workers continue to repair the plenum wall near Ramps D (Congress Street to I93) and F-D (Ted Williams Tunnel Westbound to I-93). The repairs are necessary because a large drill bit broke free from the flatbed truck carrying it and rolled into the wall. Previously, MassDOT restored mobile phone service in the tunnel as a result of this accident, which had also damaged the communications conduits. Workers performed a routine visual inspection of the boatwalls entering the Ramp L Tunnel (in the area of Exit 20 Northbound to I-90 Eastbound). A boatwall is a section of tunnel that does not have a roof. It is essentially a sunken section of roadway with earth on the outside of the walls. MassDOT repaired two cameras in the I-93 Southbound Tunnel. MassDOT cleaned the lenses on all cameras in the Callahan and Sumner Tunnels. Workers repaired a damaged crash attenuator near Exit 26 in the I-93 Northbound Tunnel. Contractor HNTB conducted a lighting study in the Ted Williams Tunnel Eastbound as part of MassDOT’s plan for permanent replacement of strapped overhead lighting. Daytime work: • MassDOT closed a lane on the I-90 Eastbound ramp at Exit 22 to facilitate a Massachusetts State Police investigation into violence against homeless persons nearby.
