These could be in the format of tests or a glossary although it should be noted that candidates benefit from learning terminology. Details should be very specific. Good examples are given in the NABs. At Intermediate 1, the topic should be very familiar and possibly aimed at the candidates’ own age group. The purpose, target audience, form, genre, length and internal/external controls should be specified. Deadlines for each stage of production could be given and as far as possible strictly adhered to (it is better to keep length of the production to a minimum). NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 1 Production Student Logbook Brief Example You should produce a pamphlet advertising the clubs available in college/school. It should be 4 pages long. You will work in groups of 4/5. Group 1 – Page 1 – a montage of photos and/or graphics depicting what is available. Group 2 – Page 2 – a description of the clubs Group 3 – Page 3 – a description of the clubs Group 4 – Page 4 – a round up of what the students/pupils would like. Schedule Deadline – End of November Stage 1 – Pre-production you should find out what is available, who runs the club, what is the venue and time speak to the people involved recce the venue, would it be photographic? discuss what you think would be the most popular/unusual/interesting and use them for your front cover find out if anyone is good at drawing cartoons – it could be more interesting to have a mix of photos and cartoons etc Deadline – End of term Stage 2 – Production take photos do interviews write articles design/computer generate graphics print etc 1 NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 1 Production Student Logbook Deadline – 14th Jan Stage 3 – Post Production give to a test group (mix of club organisers and students/pupils) get feedback do evaluation Controls eg: Equipment can be booked out with class hours by speaking to ****. Permission must be obtained before taking or publishing photos. Resources List Hardware and Software available Research Give specific research area, eg: questionnaire to students/pupils on current clubs and ideas for possible future clubs look at similar pamphlets etc 2 NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 1 Production Student Logbook Introductory Student/Pupil Checklist This checklist should be customised to suit the production, eg: Task Tick Set up and operate camera on tripod Film sequence including: pan, zoom, tilt, in camera edit, hand held Recce Caption generate Story board Shot list Running order Edit Sound dub 3 NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 1 Production Student Logbook Production Meetings Production Meeting 1 (Introduction to the brief) Discuss brief (category, style, tone, audience) Discuss ideas in terms of key aspects Discuss research Discuss production schedule Allocate roles/tasks Production Meeting 2 (At the end of the planning stage) Discuss progress (each group gives a progress report) Analyse results of research Check organisation for production stage is complete Allocate roles and tasks for production Check production schedule Production Meeting 3 (Half-way through production stage) Discuss progress Discuss deadlines Discuss note taking/logbooks Discuss points for evaluation stage Suggestions Appoint a PA (Production Assistant) to take notes at the meetings. These can then be photocopied for each candidate. The PA should also keep a copy of all relevant material – scripts, production schedule, plan/storyboard/format etc. These are kept in a central file that never leaves site. (This prevents disruption by absence.) This task could be shared. 4 NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 1 Production Student Logbook Pre-Production: Assessment Grid PC 1 PRE-PRODUCTION Contribute to planning a production 1a Talk about brief.
