These could be in the format of tests or a glossary although it should be noted that candidates benefit from learning terminology. The brief should be a sufficiently challenging topic to require supported research. NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 2 Production Student Logbook Brief At Intermediate 2, the production should involve: Topic: Medium: Purpose: Target Audience: Form: Genre: Length: Deadline: Internal/ External Control: Example You must make a three-minute video to be shown to second years on the effect of smoking. You have until the end of November to research and plan the video. At this stage you should decide on the appropriate purpose, form and genre. Your research will involve talking to guidance staff, second years, considering your own experience and getting information from the health centre, library and internet. If you use music you must consider copyright. The filming should be complete by the end of term. The deadline for completion is 1st February when one of the Guidance team will view the video. You must get permission before leaving the room for any reason, eg research, recce, filming. The evaluation will be done on 15th February. 1 NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 2 Production Student Logbook Resources Hardware: Examples Software: Examples Research Identification of sources Topic research Audience and product research Identification of constraints Examples: Library Web sites Interviews Surveys Recce etc 2 NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 2 Production Student Logbook Introductory Student/Pupil Checklist This checklist should be customised to suit the production, eg: Task Tick Set up and operate camera on tripod Film sequence including: pan, zoom, tilt, in camera edit, hand held Direct Vision mix Floor/location manage Recce Caption generate Story board Shot list Running order Edit Sound dub 3 NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 2 Production Student Logbook Production Meetings Production Meeting 1 (Introduction to the brief) Discuss brief (category, style, tone, audience) Discuss ideas in terms of key aspects Discuss research Discuss production schedule Allocate roles/tasks Production Meeting 2 (At the end of the planning stage) Discuss progress (each group gives a progress report) Analyse results of research Check organisation for production stage is complete Allocate roles and tasks for production Check production schedule Production Meeting 3 (Half-way through production stage) Discuss progress Discuss deadlines Discuss note taking/logbooks Discuss points for evaluation stage Suggestions Appoint a PA (Production Assistant) to take notes at the meetings. These can then be photocopied for each candidate. The PA should also keep a copy of all relevant material – scripts, production schedule, plan/storyboard/format etc. These are kept in a central file that never leaves site. (This prevents disruption by absence.) This task could be shared. 4 NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 2 Production Student Logbook Pre-Production: Assessment Grid PRE-PRODUCTION Contribute to planning a production PC 1 1a Contributed useful ideas and information 1a Allocation/negotiation of tasks to confirm ideas about content (format) 1b Participation in the planning of the product – demonstrate planning and technical skills 1a/b Tick Discuss and allocate roles and a timetable for the production schedule 1c Personal research: give examples 1c Group research: give examples 1d Create a glossary of technical terminology Pre-Production Notes with Evaluation Comments completed by candidate Examples: What ideas for your production do you think are appropriate to your target audience? Are there any you do not think are suitable? Which of your own ideas do you think was good and why? How well did the group work together in the planning stage? What tasks did you do and how well did you do them? What was the most useful research? What technical skills have you learned? What have you enjoyed and what are you good at? Have you learned any other skills? Did everybody in the group complete their tasks well and on time? Are you pleased with your production’s progress? 5 NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 2 Production Student Logbook Production: Assessment Grid PC 2 PRODUCTION ACTIVITIES Contribute to implementing a group production 2a Co-operate in organising the production 2a Negotiate working methods and rules for managing the production 2a Share ideas and information 2b Contribute effectively in terms of production skills 2b Allocate roles 2b Contribute to production schedule 2a + c Choose the best combination and use technical terms accurately 2a + c Review production process and use technical terms accurately Tick The above grid can be customised to include media and text specific activities. Production Notes with Evaluation Comments completed by candidate Examples: How well did you individually co-operate, give ideas and negotiate with the group? How well did the group perform as a whole? What improvements could you make? What production skills were you good at? What could you improve? Did the group keep to the schedule? What improvements could have been made? What problems did you have? How did you sort them out? Technically what have you learned? What did you do well? How could you improve? 6 NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 2 Production Student Logbook Post-Production Assessment Grid POST-PRODUCTION ACTIVITIES Review and evaluate a group production PC 3 3a Explain the strengths and weaknesses of the production 3b Explain the strengths and weaknesses of your contribution 3d Use technical terms appropriate to the medium and tasks described in 3a and 3b 3c Suggest alternative strategies for improvement 3c Justify the alternative strategies 3e Evidence to justify conclusions 3e Cover evaluation criteria relevant to media and product Tick Post-Production Notes To be used as notes for the evaluation (maximum one A4 sheet) Examples: Review the final product in terms of content, eg Would the target audience appreciate the product? (Have you any evidence/feedback from the audience?) Did constraints (time, lack of money/resources) restrict the production etc? Was the brief met? eg Did you meet your deadline? Review the product in terms of language, eg use technical terms accurately. Were choices made appropriate and successfully executed both individually and as a group? Discuss both technological and non-technological strengths and weaknesses. As an individual and as part of the group, explain your contribution during both planning and implementation. Explain what has been learned in terms of institutional contexts (deadlines, resources, copyright, taste etc) and audience contexts. Suggest improved strategies and explain why they would be better. Media specific questions could be added, eg Was the camera work good? 7 NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 2 Production Student Logbook Plan/Storyboard/Format Appropriate to media and production A photocopy could be done for each candidate 8 NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 2 Production Student Logbook Production Schedule A photocopy could be done for each candidate Example Deadline End November End of term 1st February Stage Pre-production Production Post Production Task Question Guidance Staff Survey pupils Health info Check copyright for music Etc Film GVs Film music video Film interviews Generate captions Etc Edit Add Voice-over Dub music Etc 9 Completed NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 2 Production Student Logbook Self Assessment in Practical Activities Pre-Production (Planning) Activity Involvement Actual Contribution Tick Analyse Brief – group discussion Very involved Involved Little involvement Give ideas Lots Some A few Research Very effective/useful Effective/useful Not very effective/useful Contribute to Production Schedule Very effective Effective Not effective Use technical terms Very good Good Needs improvement 10 NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 2 Production Student Logbook Production Involvement Activity Actual Contribution Tick Personal organisation Very good Good Needs improvement Negotiate Very well Well Needs improvement Communicate ideas/ information Very well Well Needs improvement Technical skills Very good Good Fair Non-technical skills Very good Good Fair Use of technical terms Very good Good Fair 11 NQ Media Studies – Intermediate 2 Production Student Logbook Post-Production Activity Involvement Actual Contribution Tick Composing/editing final version Very effective Effective Needs improving 12
