Experiences and outcomes
The ‘Threads in the tartan’ initiative provides an opportunity for learners to achieve a
significant number of experiences and outcomes in Religious and Moral Education,
Health and Wellbeing and Literacy.
The four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence are fully addressed. Pupils learn
successfully through engaging in collaborative, meaningful work resulting in a real
impact on their community. By developing their literacy skills as a means of self
expression and in showcasing their ideas they present themselves as confident
individuals and effective communicators. Through the emphasis on the core values
of justice and equality, they develop as responsible citizens recognising fairness for
everyone.
The initiative correlates well with the seven principles of curriculum design. Learners
have to rise to the challenge of organising, contributing and participating in a whole
school celebration. It is relevant to all learners and inclusive; the collaborative aspect
of learning and teaching means that pupils of all abilities have the opportunity to
contribute. The initiative is flexible and allows pupils to contribute their own ideas
which are relevant to their situation and to the community.
Learners are encouraged to know, respect and care for the rights, responsibilities,
values and opinions of others in Scotland and the wider world. Through the initial
exploration of Scotland’s culture and heritage, then by engaging with other cultures
and traditions pupils develop the knowledge, skills and values to act responsibly as
global citizens.

Senior 3 Term 3 The Challenge of Racism – Threads in the Tartan
About the unit: The unit continues from work in S1 and S2 where pupils have examined what
Christianity and Buddhism have to say about justice and ethics. Pupils explore racism, discrimination,
prejudice and stereotyping and religious responses to these. Pupils participate in their second
Challenge by organising an annual festival “Threads in the Tartan” in conjunction with other
departments within school as appropriate, as a celebration of Scotland’s multicultural heritage. In the
previous years the event has gone forward for the Anne Frank Award organised by Grampian Racial
Equality Unit.
Learning Outcomes: Pupils will
• Understand the causes and the consequences of racism
• Explore ways in which racism can be challenged in school
• Participate in a challenge raising awareness about racism in Scotland
Homeworks: Design an anti-racist poster for school. Complete work towards your group challenge.
Log your work so it can be used as evidence.
Teaching strategies include: Individual/paired work, group work, whole class discussion, circle time,
team building games, written work.
