A310 Syllabus Spring 2016 (831) 479-6277 (831) 786-4703 Course Description CABT 210 is a basic skills level keyboarding class that introduces elementary keyboarding techniques using the alphabet keys. It is designed for beginning typing or computer keyboarding students who desire a gentle approach to learning keyboarding or who may need to overcome physical or other limitations. It is a self-paced class with no regular class meetings. Course Requirements Students will use the Keyboarding Pro software to practice a minimum of 25 hours, and reach a minimum of 10 words per minute (wpm) with no more than 1 error per minute (epm) in 2-minute timed writings. Lessons MUST be completed in the Aptos or Watsonville campus Computer Technology Center (CTC). You must attend an inperson orientation, turn in required printed reports, and complete lab hours on campus. If you feel that you have special needs, please contact the Accessibility Support Center (formerly DSPS) early in the semester at 479-6379. Grades This .5 unit class (½ of a unit) is offered for a Pass/No Pass grade. To pass, you must do all of the following: 1. Complete Lessons 1-10 in Keyboarding Pro and related timed writings, consistently reaching at least 10 words per minute. 2. Turn in Summary Lessons 1-25 reports as required (See the Progress Sheet handout). 3. Document at least 25 hours of practice in the CTC by clocking in to CABT 210 each time you log in to a computer to work on your Keyboarding lessons. (Please see staff if you have questions about your hours.) ďIMPORTANT: All work must be turned in and final timed writings completed before finals week. Incomplete Grades, Drop for Lack of Progress, and Withdrawal Policy Instructors may assign Incomplete (I) grades only if you have completed 75% of the course work to passing standards, and illness or emergency prevents you from completing the course. You must turn in at least the first summary lessons report by week 11 or you may be dropped from the course. If you wish to receive a Withdraw (W) grade, it is your responsibility to officially withdraw by the 12th week of the semester. Please see us if you have questions. Student Learning Outcome: At the end of this course, students will demonstrate elementary keyboarding skills on the alphabetic computer keyboard with the goal of between 10 to 24 words a minute with no more than one error per minute. Textbook: College Keyboarding, Keyboarding Course, Lessons 1-25, by VanHuss, Forde and Woo, South-Western Publishing Company, 18th edition. Copies can be checked out to use in the CTCs with a Cabrillo Library card. Software: Keyboarding Pro Deluxe. The software is installed in the Aptos and Watsonville CTCs for your use.
