Revised October 22, 2012
Explanation/Evidence of Need
(indicate how this need was
assessed)
The Student Success Act of 2012
requires that all new students have
a comprehensive Education Plan
after 15 degree applicable units
completed. Increased provision of
counseling services required to
receive Student Success and
Support Programs funding for 14/15
academic year
To align Cabrillo’s Transfer Center
leadership position with comparable
positions around the State.
Recommended by Region 4 CCC
Transfer Center Director’s Assn.
The new Student Success and
Support Program formula relies
heavily on the provision of
Counseling services including the
Abbreviated and Comprehensive
Education Plans and follow up
services
Status (Comment on progress of
new goals/recommendations listed
in last annual update)
Counselor/Student ratio is
approximately 1:1100, with full
implementation of SSA
requirements needed within the
coming year
Follow up Services to at-risk
students required by SB 1456
Workshops scheduled to begin
week of 6/24/13
The position is currently
supplemented with additional
Academic Specialist units in order
to accomplish the work needed.
Mandatory CG 51 Intro. to College
course required for incoming first
year students. Required workshop
for students on Academic and
Progress Dismissal, also offered to
those on Probation. Ed Plan
workshops designed to help
students develop abbreviated Ed
Plan, prepare for Counseling
session to develop Comprehensive
Ed Plan.
Implement Education Plan workshop
required for students prior to making a
counseling appointment for development of
the Comprehensive Education Plan
Review and revise our SARS appointment
Reason Codes to better align with new MIS
reporting elements being developed as a
result of the Student Success Act of 2012.
Increased Education Plan
requirements of SB 1456; better
directing of students at different
stages in process
We currently manually enter
contact information (by Reason
Code reports from SARS) into
Datatel to inform the MIS reporting
needs regarding education plans.
As funding will now be more directly
tied to completion of education
plans, we need to more accurately
count the number of these plans
being generated and modified
during counseling appointments.
While the new Student Planning
functions of WebAdvisor may
eventually provide the needed MIS
data, until such a time we will
continue to manually input the data
via the CON screen.
Pilot workshop scheduled to begin
6/10/13
Work has been done in SARS-GRID
to streamline the list of Reason
Codes seen by students, staff, and
counselors. Counselors are now
editing the appointment Reason
code to make sure it accurately
reflects the content of the
appointment. We are working
with IT to monitor the
development of the new MIS data
elements, and will further
streamline our Reason Codes
accordingly.
