These two-year fellowships are awarded yearly to 126 researchers in recognition of distinguished performance and a unique potential to make substantial contributions to their field. Candidates must hold a tenure track (or equivalent) position at a college, university, or other degree-granting institution in the United States or Canada. Tenure track faculty positions at the candidate’s institution must include a yearly teaching requirement. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in chemistry, computational or evolutionary molecular biology, computer science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, ocean sciences, physics, or a related field. These include economics, finance, financial management, information systems, organization theory, operations management, human resources management, risk management, and marketing, as well as the traditional acquisition areas such as contracting, program/project management, logistics, test and evaluation and systems engineering management. The ARP primarily supports scholarly research through assistance vehicles that will benefit the general public and/or private sector to a larger extent than any direct benefits that may be gained by the Department of Defense (DOD). Studies of government processes, systems, or policies should focus on expanding the body of knowledge, theory and/or research methodologies that are also relevant to processes, systems, or policies outside the DOD. Examples include the study of the effects of music on mood, cognition, and healing; the medical and occupational well-being of music professionals; and the creative process underlying music. The archiving and preservation projects grant program awards grants to organizations and individuals in support of efforts that advance the archiving and preservation of the music and recorded sound heritage of the Americas. In order to encourage new approaches and develop innovative methods in any field of the humanities, these grants provide funding for up to three years in any of the following areas: developing innovative methods—as well as standards and best practices—for building and merging digital collections that are significant and of major current interest, for use in humanities research; developing and implementing generic tools, methods, and techniques for accessing and processing digital resources relevant to humanities research; creating new digital modes of scholarly communication and publishing that facilitate international cooperation and dissemination of humanities scholarship; and developing models for effectively managing digital data generated in humanities research projects (for example, texts, audio files, photographs, 3D objects) and exemplifying those models in case studies. Collaboration between U.S. and German partners is a key requirement for this grant category. Each application must be sponsored by at least one eligible German individual or institution, and at least one U.S. institution and there must be a project director from each country. 20140925-HG (GG 3/31/14) URL: http://www.neh.gov/grants/odh/ nehdfg-bilateral-digital-humanitiesprogram Deadline: 9/25/2014 ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS & PHYSICAL SCIENCES 25-6 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) (NSF) The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) is a Presidential award established by the White House in 1995. The PAESMEM program is administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. PAESMEM recognizes individuals for their mentoring of persons from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, women, A weekly publication of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. Nominations, including selfnominations, are invited for Individual and Organizational PAESMEM awards. Individuals and organizations in all public and private sectors are eligible including industry, academia, K-12, military and government, non-profit organizations, and foundations. Nominations are encouraged from all geographical regions in the U.S. including, its territories and particularly jurisdictions designated by Congress under NSF’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR). Multiple programs or individuals from the same institution may be nominated. However each program or individual may be nominated only once in a competition. Understanding the critical role of establishing that independence early in one’s career, it is expected that funds will be used to support untenured faculty or research scientists (or equivalent) in their first two years in an academic position after the PhD. One may not yet have received any other grants in the Principal Investigator (PI) role from any institution or agency, including from the CAREER program or any other award post-PhD. Serving as co-PI, Senior Personnel, Postdoctoral Fellow, or other Fellow does not count against this eligibility rule. It is expected that these funds will allow the new CISE Research Initiation Initiative PI to support one or more graduate students for up to two years. Deadline: 9/24/2014 HEALTH & LIFE SCIENCES 25-8 Outstanding Investigator Award (R35) (NIH) This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites grant applications for the Outstanding Investigator Award (R35) in any area of cancer research. The objective of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Outstanding Investigator Award (OIA) is to provide long-term support to experienced investigators with outstanding records of cancer research productivity who propose to conduct exceptional research. The OIA is intended to allow investigators the opportunity to take greater risks, be more adventurous in their lines of inquiry, or take the time to develop new techniques. The OIA would allow an Institution to submit an application nominating an established Program Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI) for a 7-year grant. Although groundbreaking research often involves a degree of risk, applications should be based on a sound scientific rationale that is established through logical reasoning and/or critical review and analysis of the literature. Due to this award’s emphasis on innovation, the presentation of preliminary data relevant to prostate cancer and the proposed project is encouraged but not required. Research deemed innovative may represent a new paradigm, challenge current paradigms, look at existing problems from new perspectives, or exhibit other highly creative qualities. Research that is an incremental advance upon published data is not considered innovative. The PCRP seeks applications from investigators from a wide spectrum of disciplines including, but not limited to, basic science, engineering, bioinformatics, population science, translational research, and clinical research. In addition, applicants are expected to address at least one of the PCRP focus areas and are highly encouraged to address one of the PCRP overarching challenges. MMS seeks proposals that are methodologically innovative, grounded in theory, and have potential utility for multiple fields within the social and behavioral sciences. As part of its larger portfolio, the MMS Program partners with a consortium of federal statistical agencies to support research proposals that further the development of new and innovative approaches to surveys and to the analysis of survey data. The first such Fellowships were awarded in 1998 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Marshall Plan. The Fellowships, which are funded by the Marshall Sherfield Fellowship Foundation, and administered by the Marshall Commission, enable American scientists or engineers to undertake post-doctoral research for a period of one to two academic years at a British university or research institute. The aim of the Marshall Sherfield Fellowships is to introduce American scientists and engineers to the cutting edge of UK science and engineering. It is intended that this in turn will build longer-term contacts and international links between the United Kingdom and the United States in key scientific areas.
