25-2 FY14 Acquisition Research
Program (DOD)
The Government is interested in stimulating and supporting scholarly research
in academic disciplines that bear on public policy and management in the field of
government acquisition. These include
economics, finance, financial management, information systems, organization
theory, operations management, human
resources management, risk management, and marketing, as well as the traditional acquisition areas such as
contracting, program/project management, logistics, test and evaluation and
systems engineering management. The
ARP primarily supports scholarly
research through assistance vehicles that
will benefit the general public and/or private sector to a larger extent than any
direct benefits that may be gained by the
Department of Defense (DOD). Studies
of government processes, systems, or
policies should focus on expanding the
body of knowledge, theory and/or
research methodologies that are also relevant to processes, systems, or policies
outside the DOD. NPS-BAA-14-002

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in the United States and the
German Research Foundation (Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft e.V., DFG) are
working together to offer support for
projects that contribute to developing and
implementing digital infrastructures and
services for humanities research. In order
to encourage new approaches and develop
innovative methods in any field of the
humanities, these grants provide funding
for up to three years in any of the following areas: developing innovative methods—as well as standards and best
practices—for building and merging digital collections that are significant and of
major current interest, for use in humanities research; developing and implementing generic tools, methods, and
techniques for accessing and processing
digital resources relevant to humanities
research; creating new digital modes of
scholarly communication and publishing
that facilitate international cooperation
and dissemination of humanities scholarship; and developing models for effectively managing digital data generated in
humanities research projects (for example, texts, audio files, photographs, 3D
objects) and exemplifying those models
in case studies. Collaboration between
U.S. and German partners is a key
requirement for this grant category. Each
application must be sponsored by at least
one eligible German individual or institution, and at least one U.S. institution and
there must be a project director from each
country. 20140925-HG (GG 3/31/14)

25-7 Computer and Information
Science and Engineering (CISE)
Research Initiation Initiative (CRII)
(NSF)
With the goal of encouraging research
independence immediately upon obtaining one’s first academic position after
receipt of the PhD, the Directorate for
Computer and Information Science and
Engineering (CISE) will award grants to
initiate the course of one’s independent
research. Understanding the critical role
of establishing that independence early in
one’s career, it is expected that funds will
be used to support untenured faculty or
research scientists (or equivalent) in their
first two years in an academic position
after the PhD. One may not yet have
received any other grants in the Principal
Investigator (PI) role from any institution
or agency, including from the CAREER
program or any other award post-PhD.
Serving as co-PI, Senior Personnel, Postdoctoral Fellow, or other Fellow does not
count against this eligibility rule. It is
expected that these funds will allow the
new CISE Research Initiation Initiative PI
to support one or more graduate students
for up to two years. NSF 14-562

This Funding Opportunity Announcement
(FOA) invites grant applications for the
Outstanding Investigator Award (R35) in
any area of cancer research. The objective
of the National Cancer Institute (NCI)
Outstanding Investigator Award (OIA) is
to provide long-term support to experienced investigators with outstanding
records of cancer research productivity
who propose to conduct exceptional
research. The OIA is intended to allow
investigators the opportunity to take
greater risks, be more adventurous in their
lines of inquiry, or take the time to
develop new techniques. The OIA would
allow an Institution to submit an application nominating an established Program
Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI)
for a 7-year grant. PAR-14-267 (NIHG 6/

25-10 DoD Prostate Cancer Idea
Development Award (DoD)
The Idea Development Award supports
new ideas that represent innovative
approaches to prostate cancer research
and have the potential to make an important contribution to the PCRP mission.
Although groundbreaking research often
involves a degree of risk, applications
should be based on a sound scientific
rationale that is established through logical reasoning and/or critical review and
analysis of the literature. Due to this
award’s emphasis on innovation, the presentation of preliminary data relevant to
prostate cancer and the proposed project
is encouraged but not required. Research
deemed innovative may represent a new
paradigm, challenge current paradigms,
look at existing problems from new perspectives, or exhibit other highly creative
qualities. Research that is an incremental
advance upon published data is not considered innovative. The PCRP seeks
applications from investigators from a
wide spectrum of disciplines including,
but not limited to, basic science, engineering, bioinformatics, population science,
translational research, and clinical
research. In addition, applicants are
expected to address at least one of the
PCRP focus areas and are highly encouraged to address one of the PCRP overarching challenges. W81XWH-14-PCRPIDA (GG 5/6/14)

25-12 Marshall Sherfield Fellowships
(Marshall)
The Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission will be offering one post-doctoral
Marshall Sherfield Fellowship in 2015.
The first such Fellowships were awarded
in 1998 to mark the 50th anniversary of
the Marshall Plan. The Fellowships,
which are funded by the Marshall Sherfield Fellowship Foundation, and administered by the Marshall Commission,
enable American scientists or engineers to
undertake post-doctoral research for a
period of one to two academic years at a
British university or research institute.
The aim of the Marshall Sherfield Fellowships is to introduce American scientists
and engineers to the cutting edge of UK
science and engineering. It is intended
that this in turn will build longer-term
contacts and international links between
the United Kingdom and the United
States in key scientific areas.
