Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due
date listed in the Funding Bulletin (FB
7-2) or by at least two months prior to
the sponsor deadline if you wish to submit to a limited submission program.

GENERAL
7-3 Chemical Approaches to Target
Validation for Drug Resistant
Pathogens (R01) (NIH)
The purpose of this FOA is to solicit
research focused on using chemical tools
to either address scientific questions
about microbial biological processes and
host-pathogen interactions and/or determine the biological activity of host or
pathogen proteins. Rather than focusing
on identifying medicinal products, these
teams will take a broader approach of
analyzing biological targets that can
serve as the basis for future chemicals
screens to identify drug candidates as
well as contribute to functional annotation of gene products. RFA-AI-11-004

7-1 21st Century Science InitiativeResearch Awards (JSMF)
The James S. McDonnell Foundation’s
21st Century Research Awards are
designed to support research projects with
a high probability of generating new
knowledge and insights. Projects submitted for funding consideration should be at
an early, even preliminary stage of development, and should be intended to break
new ground or to revisit commonly-held
assumptions. Projects submitted should be
sufficiently cross-disciplinary or heterodox
to have a strong likelihood of influencing
the development of new ways of thinking
about important problems. (TGA 1/11)

7-2 NIMHD Science Education
Initiative (R25) (NIH)
This FOA encourages applications from
organizations to support educational, mentoring, and/or career development programs for individuals from
underrepresented or health disparity populations to facilitate the development of a
nationwide cohort of scientists and a
multi-disciplinary national pool of health

intends to further the humanities along a
broad front, supporting projects which
address the concern of the historical studia humanitatis: a humanistic education
rooted in the great traditions of the past;
the formation of human beings according
to cultural, moral, and aesthetic ideals
derived from that past; and the ongoing
debate over how these ideals may best be
conceived and realized. Programs in the
following areas are eligible: history;
archeology; literature; languages, both
classical and modern; philosophy, ethics;
comparative religion; the history, criticism, and theory of the arts; and those
aspects of the social sciences which share
the content and methods of humanistic
disciplines. The Foundation welcomes
projects that cross the boundaries between
humanistic disciplines and explore the
connection between the humanities and
other areas of scholarship. (TGA 2/11)

James Bible (NEH)
The NEH Small Grants to Libraries program brings traveling exhibitions and
other types of humanities public programming to libraries across the country.
“Manifold Greatness: The Creation and
Afterlife of the King James Bible” is a
collaboration between the National
Endowment for the Humanities (NEH),
the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Harry
Ransom Center at the University of Texas
(HRC), the Bodleian Library at Oxford
University, and the American Library
Association (ALA) Public Programs
Office. The traveling exhibition and tour
are funded by a major grant from NEH to
the Folger Shakespeare Library. “Manifold Greatness: The Creation and Afterlife of the King James Bible” tells the
story of the origins, creation, and impact
of the book, including its influence on
English and American literature, and its
multifaceted impact on culture and society to the present day. The year 2011
marks the four hundredth anniversary of
the first printing of the King James Bible.

7-10 Chemistry and Materials
Research in Cultural Heritage Science
(CHS) (NSF)
The National Science Foundation (NSF)
seeks to enhance opportunities for collaborative activities between conservation
scientists, chemists and materials scientists to address grand challenges in the
field of science and cultural heritage. The
program solicits collaborative proposals
between researchers in US museums and
academic institutions that aim to: a)
develop new and improved analytical
techniques and instruments with high sensitivity and spatial resolution (large and
small scale) for restricted volume and/or
standoff detection of component materials, degradation products and deterioration markers that are suitable for nondestructive analysis of cultural heritage
objects; b) study dynamic changes leading to degradation of cultural heritage
objects; c) design new multi-functional
treatment materials for cultural heritage
objects; d) develop new theoretical models to predict dynamic processes in cultural heritage objects that lead to their
degradation while taking into account
their molecular and materials properties
and their surface and bulk interactions
with environmental perimeters. NSF 11528 (GG 2/11/11)

Society (METABOLOMICS) (NSF)
This is a U.S.-Japan joint program coordinated by the National Science Foundation
and the Japan Science and Technology
Agency (JST). Proposals submitted in
response to this solicitation must represent joint projects involving both US and
Japanese research groups. JST and NSF
will jointly manage the proposal review
and award process. The focus of METABOLOMICS will be on plants, microbes,
and algae and eligible research areas will

7-12 Translational Research to Help
Older Adults Maintain their Health
and Independence in the Community
(R01) (NIH)
The National Institute on Aging (NIA)
and the Administration on Aging (AoA)
invite applications using the R01 award
mechanism for translational research that
moves evidence-based research findings
towards the development of new interventions, programs, policies, practices, and
tools that can be used by communitybased organizations to help elderly individuals remain healthy and independent,
and living in their own homes and communities. The goal of this FOA is to support translational research involving
collaborations between academic research
centers and community-based organizations with expertise serving the elderly
(such as city and state health departments,
city/town leadership councils, and Area
Agencies on Aging) that will enhance our
understanding of practical tools, techniques, programs and policies that communities across the nation can use to more
effectively respond to needs of their aging
populations. PA-11-123 (NIHG 2/18/11)

joint activity of the Japan-U.S. Friendship
Commission (JUSFC) and the National
Endowment for the Humanities. Awards
support research on modern Japanese
society and political economy, Japan's
international relations, and U.S.-Japan
relations. The program encourages innovative research that puts these subjects in

Stimulating Research Related to the
Science of Broadening Participation
(NSF)
The Division of Behavioral and Cognitive
Sciences (BCS) and the Division of
Social and Economic Sciences (SES)
within the Social, Behavioral and Economic Science Directorate (SBE) wish to
bring to your attention our goal of stimulating research related to the Science of
Broadening Participation (SBP). In FY
2011, BCS and SES will support research
that utilizes the theories, methods and
analytic techniques of the social, behavioral and economic sciences to better
understand the barriers as well as factors
that enhance our ability to broaden participation in STEM. Scholars with research
proposals that contribute to the Science of
Broadening Participation should submit
proposals to the most relevant standing
programs of the Social, Behavioral and
Economic Sciences (SBE) Directorate.
