Book synopsis
For centuries, migration has been part of Polish history. In recent decades, however, migration patterns have intensified and undergone
significant changes, especially after the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989/90 and Poland’s accession to the European Union in 2004. This collection
of essays is the first to explicitly address the cultural impact of Polish migration to three European countries that have absorbed the major part of
the recent exodus: Germany, Ireland, and UK. The volume analyses cultural activities of Poles abroad, explores topical trends in Polish migrant
literature, and discusses the representation of migrants in film. By opening up a decidedly cultural perspective, the essays hope to break new
ground and enrich the scientific discourse on migration in the European context.

Joanna Rostek, lecturer at the Chair of English Literature and Culture at the University of Passau, has published in the fields of contemporary
Anglophone sea fiction, women’s studies, and Polish migrant culture.
Dirk Uffelmann holds the Chair of Slavic Literatures and Cultures at the University of Passau. His research interests are Russian, Polish, Czech,
Slovak, and Central Asian literature, philosophy, religion, migration, and internet studies.
