European Commission Information Society Directorate-General One of the missions of the Information Society Directorate-General is to support initiatives that encourage and enable all European citizens to benefit from, and participate in the Information Society. The unit Elderly and People with Disabilities funds a number of research projects to ensure equal access and participation for all in the Information Society and to develop systems that empower persons with disabilities and ageing citizens to play a full role in society and to increase their autonomy. The unit also contributes to policies and regulations, such as the eEurope Action Plans and the implementation of the Communication Services Legislation Package. For the latter, the unit works with the INCOM group (Inclusive Communications), made up of representatives of Member States, industry, user organisations and standardisers, in order to facilitate access by users with disabilities to electronic communications services.
