The European Documentation Centres are supported by the European Commission and the EU Publication Office and they promote education and research on EU issues at University level and encourage the academic community to engage in the debate on Europe. The centres help with enquiries ranging from straightforward document searches to in-depth research on Representatives from European EDCs at the Excelsior Hotel, Valletta. 8 November 2011 1|Page Issue No. 4 / 2011 European topics. The majority of EDCs also organise courses for students on how to trace EU information online. The European Documentation Centres have 1-2 national coordinators in each EU Member State and they meet regularly to discuss common topics and problems. This year the coordinators' gathering took place in Valletta, Malta 7 – 8 November. The c. 30 strong coordinator group also visited the European Documentation and Research Centre in Msida. The group was welcomed by Professor Roderick Pace, Director of the EDRC and Daniela Callus, EDC librarian. Professor Pace discussed the EDC Representatives being addressed by Professor Pace during their visit at the EDRC. challenge of a modern EDC to find balance between maintaining the printed collection and offering publications and other information sources in digital format. There was a brief discussion on how these questions have been handled in other countries in order to share best practices between EDC colleagues. Another topic which was touched upon during the meeting was how to increase the visibility of the centre and make it a more active member of the academic community. The EDRC publishes articles in the newsletter of the university and has improved signposting at the campus. The visitors were very interested in the idea that the centre will start organising mid-day lectures on important EU developments. The EDC group's visit to Msida was concluded by a brief look at the university main library. All in all the visit was a success and visitors were very happy to get to know the past and present of the EDRC. 2|Page Issue No. 4 / 2011 NEW ACCESSIONS LIST New publications received and which are available at the European Documentation Centre.
