Essential Question: How does friction affect the motion of the car?
Explore/Engage: Divide students into small groups. Each group of
students are given a K’NEX car and a meter stick. Each group is
permitted to move around to areas with carpet, linoleum, and a concrete
surface. But first, they are asked to discuss possibilities for a plan that
would help them determine which surface has the most friction.
Explain: Once the group decides on a procedure for the experiment to
solve the problem, they record their purpose, prediction, materials and
procedure.
Elaborate (Inquiry): While doing the experiment to test their hypothesis,
students record observations.
Evaluate: At the end of the experiment, they collaborate to form a
conclusion. If they are unsuccessful at finding a solution, or conclusion,
students will make changes to their procedure. Repeat test, and record
their findings.

Accommodations for
Differentiated Instruction
Visual: Provide a flow chart to help students organize the steps
for following science process skills.
Auditory: Ask students for oral summaries of their progress
concerning the experiment. Also, students will work
collaboratively to discuss ideas, findings and observations.
Kinesthetic: Dramatization of friction
Cross Curricular
Integration
Students will measure the distance traveled in meters and convert to
centimeters.
