Northampton Community College Magazine 08/09 annual report www.northampton.edu Northampton Community College aNNual report 08/09 Dr. arthur Scott president, northampton community college the 2008-2009 year will be long remembered as the year of the “great recession,” with a corresponding financial turmoil that affected nearly every family and organization throughout the country. our College was no exception; while enrollment in our credit programs grew, the value of the Foundation’s endowment decreased significantly, and we suffered serious enrollment losses in our Community education Division as companies cut back their training contracts. our non-credit enrollment “drop off” was more than offset by an incredible surge of students taking credit courses. For our spring 2009 semester, we enrolled 10,649 students, by far the largest credit semester enrollment in our history. Current registration numbers for fall 2009 indicate we will exceed the spring numbers by several hundred students. this enrollment surge has added new life to our campus. this annual report gives you a visual sense of the many wonderful activities and events that effectively enhanced the learning that goes on inside the classroom. this past year, our students, through the careful guidance of faculty and staff, raised the bar in terms of their community engagement and support of many social causes. the presidential election presented us with a wonderful “laboratory” in which to engage our students in the political process. and, the year provided some of our proudest civic moments as our college community rose above their own personal difficulties and provided support for others in greater need. When the employment situation was looking bleakest, staff scheduled a series of Career transition expos, which allowed hundreds of our neighbors to receive good career advice as they faced the trauma of being unemployed. those sessions led us to call a community meeting and, together with alan Jennings and the Community action Committee of the lehigh Valley, form a recession task Force to better position the community to respond to the economic crisis and to coordinate our responses to effectively utilize stimulus funds. Back on campus, a holiday bazaar offered donated clothing, books and other holiday gifts free to our students. the new First Impressions Boutique, founded this year, will now allow our students to get free business attire, also donated by members of our community, for their first professional interviews. throughout the year, we were driven by a commitment to reduce as many barriers as possible so students could be successful. this commitment included redirecting college funds to reduce the impact of the decrease à aNNual report 08/09 Northampton Community College 1 in endowed scholarships, to extending the free tuition program for the unemployed for the summer and fall semesters, and creating a book rental program to reduce the cost of books for students. and it took the form of increased attention to what it takes for students to be successful academically as we completed the third full year of our achieve the Dream initiative. the results of these efforts and many others will help keep education accessible for our students and enable them to enter our community as well-prepared adults, ready to be productive workers or successful transfer students. the external validation of our work continues as evidenced by: n NCC being the only community college in the country to receive an NEH challenge grant. n Our sponsoring school districts extending the Articles of Agreement to 2056. n The College receiving over $600,000 of federal funding from Congress. n The continuous stream of supportive comments we receive from alumni throughout the region. the next academic year is sure to present additional challenges. public funding has not been able to keep up with our significant enrollment growth, which leaves tuition as our only revenue source for increased funding at a time when our students can least afford it. Cuts to literacy grants will curtail the number of adults we can help to secure their aBe/GeD credentials, and the economic malaise will most likely continue to affect our non-credit enrollment at least in the near future. While the market has appeared to stabilize somewhat, it will be years before the Foundation’s endowment recaptures its losses. and our work in Monroe County is just beginning as we must continue to work with the county’s leadership to get the new campus built. But challenges are not new for us. While this period may test our creativity and fortitude, I am confident we will prevail. Some pundits have predicted that certain institutions will emerge from this economic crisis stronger than when they entered it. I believe that Northampton, with the talent, dedication and hard work of our faculty and staff and the ongoing assistance of our many supporters, will be one of those institutions. u 2 Northampton Community College aNNual report 08/09 editors heidi bright butler paul joly proofreader kate schaffner art director traci anfuso-young production coordinator marianne atherton contributing photographers randy monceaux philip stein hub willson president dr. arthur scott vice president institutional advancement susan k. kubik northampton community college foundation board chairman bruce a. palmer publisher northampton community college foundation 3835 green pond road bethlehem, pa 18020 ye a r in r e w e i v 08 /0 9 NeH Grant award Funds Multi-Year Initiatives in History and Culture College Cited by Carnegie Foundation for Community engagement in trans Career expos Connect adults reduced Co NCC Joins Dickinson College in ition st Degree program aNNual report 08/09 Northampton Community College 3 responding to recession, NCC first in region to offer textbook rental program 4 Northampton Community College aNNual report 08/09 $21.9 Million Financial aid awarded; M ost ever largest Graduating Class in NCC History receive Degrees Monroe County Commissioner Suzanne McCool is Winter Commencement Speaker Dr. Christine pense Named Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences three egyptian professors teach and learn at NCC aNNual report 08/09 Northampton Community College 5 Student Volunteers travel to New orleans, Help Hurricane Victims rebuild excellence recognized at Monroe Student Celebration onal Science 21 Students receive Natida Foun tion Grants Social Work Student receives Coca-Cola Scholarship NCC opens Interview Clothing Donation “Sh op” for Students Seeking Jobs Grade School pupils explore Healthcare, electronics, Biotech at Career Camps 6 Northampton Community College aNNual report 08/09 aNNual report 08/09 Northampton Community College 7 Martin luther King, Jr. tribute Celebrates “one people, one Nation, one Dream” poet alix olson appears at Main and Monroe for len roberts poetry Day Workshop Focuses on Creating Culture of peace h?” yt M r o l a e r : e g n a h C te a m author presents “Cli at Main and Monroe Monroe Campus arts and lecture Series Spotlights Jazz and poetry alumni association awards recognize outstanding achievement NCC teams with Fountain Hill elementary for Student Success Initiative 8 Northampton Community College aNNual report 08/09 africa Week explores Culture, politics, arts, Social Issues aNNual report 08/09 Northampton Community College 9 High-tech ‘Clean room’ opens for Biomanufacturing Instruction Nursing program Gets Significant Fed Grant New Hospitality Career Institute prepares Students for a Future in Growing Field $750,000 State Grant Funds College’s environmental Work with Businesses Grant Funds Solar energy panel Installation at Main Campus NCC receives Grant for Community Supported agriculture Coating & Ink research Institute open House Spartan athletics Join Competitive NJCaa Conference tribute Garden Dedication Marks earth Day, Honors Memory of NCC Friends 10 Northampton Community College aNNual report 08/09 income resources 86,948,000 loCal SpoNSorS 5,189,000 6% 36% CoMMoNWealtH oF pa 16,121,000 19% 30% auxIlIarY eNterprISeS 8,207,000 tuItIoN aND FeeS 31,134,000 9% FeDeral, State, GraNtS aND otHer 26,297,000 income application 86,948,000 CapItal aND otHer 4,997,000 6% 67% StuDeNt aID 11,080,000 auxIlIarY eNterprISeS 7,546,000 13% 9% 5% eDuCatIoN aND GeNeral 58,627,000 traNSFerS 4,698,000 aNNual report 08/09 Northampton Community College 11 Bruce a. palmer ’77 board chairman: northampton community college foundation “The second gift begins with the first thank you.” James E. Connell thank you. Because of you and your generosity, in a year in which the faltering economy dominated our conversations and our nightly news, the Northampton Community College Foundation raised more in its annual fund than in any year except the previous one. While 2007-2008 was a record annual fund year for the Foundation, 2008-2009 recorded the second largest gift total in our history through the annual fund. Your support has always helped to make Northampton Community College an excellent college. that was never more evident than this past year. as was the case in most all institutions of higher education this past year, the value of the Foundation’s endowment decreased by close to 30 percent. that decrease, coupled with a conservative spending approach adopted by our Finance Committee to preserve the inter-generational value of our endowment, lead to a significant shortfall in the amount of money we were able to allocate for student financial support. Because of the unrestricted support we received through the annual fund, we were able to make up some of that difference by directing unrestricted gifts into scholarship support. as always, we are grateful for your continued support and for your confidence in our ability to be good stewards of your investment. Foreshadowed by this tumultuous economic year was the exciting news that the Foundation was the recipient of the largest challenge grant awarded by the National endowment for the Humanities for ’08-’09. to qualify for $800,000 in matching funds, we need to raise $1.6 million over the next four years to fund an endowment that would support exciting programs in the humanities for the College and six community partners. We are hopeful that the community will get behind this exciting project and that, as you have done in the past, you will rally to our cause. Finally, the year in review would not be complete without me thanking my predecessor John eureyecko for all he did throughout his tenure as chairman to strengthen the Foundation. John stepped down in December after four years at the helm of this organization. thankfully, he remains on the board to help guide us as we look to build on his success and expand the base of individuals and corporations that support this fine institution. as an alumnus, I am grateful to John for the dedication, wisdom and tireless energy he devoted to Northampton to make it an even stronger institution. He will be a hard act to follow. u 12 Northampton Community College aNNual report 08/09 FuNDs Were traNsFerreD to tHe College For use IN tHe FolloWINg areas: scholarships & student aid . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 748,948 Faculty Development . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8,345 library, academic & student services program equipment & Development & Capital renovations . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 74,567 Foundation related salaries . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 155,645 gift in Kind Contributions. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 88,551 ToTal . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1,076,055 northampton community college foundation FIsCal Year 08/09 uNauDIteD statemeNt oF reCeIpts aND DIsBursemeNts For the Fiscal Year ended June 30, 2009 reCeIpts traNsFers to tHe College unrestricted . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 260,349 gifts in Kind . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 145,385 restricted Funds & awards . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 13,626 restricted Funds . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . - Non awards . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 684,699 loan Funds . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 22,270 Capital Funds . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 58,698 Quasi-endowment Funds . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 128,123 endowment Funds. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 448,657 35th anniversary Capital Campaign . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1,476,911 title III Funds . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 78,327 Housing rental . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1,075,308 administrative Fee. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . monroe addition lease payments . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 88,800 ToTal ReceipTs . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4,481,152 unrestricted Funds . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 102,245 restricted Funds - awards . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1,500 restricted Funds - Non awards . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 497,839 Quasi endowments . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 64,700 endowment Funds. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 139,644 Capital Funds . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 20,689 title III Funds . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 25,332 Capital gains . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Kempf ’76 What’s Inside Counts by james l. johnson ’89 Cathie and Dr. robert rienzo have traveled to all seven continents; including antarctica. they understand how travel broadens the mind. But they also believe in the value of hard work and education right here at home. Cathie is an assistant professor and manager of NCC’s diagnostic medical sonography program. Dr. rienzo, in addition to his position as radiologist at lehigh valley Hospital with a sub-specialty in nuclear medicine, is medical director of the radiography and sonography programs at Northampton. In 2005, the rienzos established the Francis W. rafferty scholarship endowment to benefit sonography students. Cathie’s deceased father is the endowment’s namesake. “He never had the opportunity for an education,” she says, “so we wanted to honor him. and it is so important to have properly educated sonographers and radiologists treating patients.” Her husband agrees. “I have always believed that to practice high-quality diagnostic radiology, you need to have a well-educated technologist,” says Dr. rienzo. “this is most important in sonography, which is the most operator-dependent imaging modality in all of radiology.” Cathie rienzo has been with the program since its inception in January 2002. then, it was a specialized diploma for which an allied health associate’s degree was needed just to apply. But the demand for change echoed like the highest frequency ultrasound. “We grew to an associate’s degree program after just three classes,” says rienzo, with a still-proud smile. “Now it’s a 24-month program, with classes running right through the summer. students receive 1,300 hours of clinical education.” NCC’s sonography program is very competitive, accepting just 11 students a year. rienzo is just as proud of the graduates as she is about the program’s success. “these are people with a passion for what they want to do,” she says. “our board pass rates are very good, and every hospital we’re affiliated with employs our graduates.” When it comes to hands-on clinical training, area hospitals blur the boundaries for NCC’s campuses and extend its education into the community. “We just couldn’t operate without our clinical sites,” rienzo says. “We have sites ranging from pocono medical Center up north, down to grand view Hospital.” the College administration “really came through for us,” she said. “In the past two years, our [on-campus sonography] machines have been updated to two new state-of-the-art machines. according to the mayo Clinic’s College of medicine Web site, employment is predicted to grow through 2016, and sonographic technology is expected to evolve rapidly, with cuttingedge designs like three-, and even four-dimensional imaging diagnostics.” Dr. rienzo sums it up: “the scholarship was established as a way to give back to the profession,” he says, “We chose to assist a well-qualified student to complete this important program as one way of doing that.” the couple believe their scholarship is a win-win for the students and for the field of sonography. u aNNual report 08/09 Northampton Community College 19 Chef-in-residence Daniel stern. tribute garden Dedication: (l-r) Dr. art scott, Diane martin, David vestal. It was 1967, and Herm, who retired from lafayette College in 1999 after more than 30 years as dean of students, had developed a course called Higher education in america. “I became very interested in the emerging role of community colleges during the ’60s and ’70s,” says Herm who now serves as a member of the Northampton Community College board of trustees. Northampton Community College faculty and staff who were creating the new college on green pond road became frequent guests in Herm’s lafayette classroom. During his long tenure as dean of students, Herm led changes in lafayette’s campus life as the institution’s reputation grew into what today is recognized as one of the top small colleges in the nation. While her husband was making a difference in the lives of college students, Kelley built a career as a teacher, guidance counselor and then a principal for elementary and middle school students. Following her own retirement, Kelley accepted an offer to lead the Northampton Community College teacher education program. “I was the only professor in the NCC education department then,” she recalls. “I was committed to bringing the best practices in teacher education to the College classroom, and I was very impressed when I arrived at Northampton to find faculty who were totally committed to teaching and to the question of how best to help students learn.” “What impressed me even more,” Kelley continues, “were my students. I came to understand just how many were working against great odds to stay in college to achieve their goals. When I discovered that there was no scholarship specifically to help NCC education majors, my husband and I decided that we should establish one.” as a result, the Kissiah’s created the Kelley Kissiah teacher education scholarship endowment Fund, which has been providing scholarships for future teachers at NCC since 2001. “students who receive our scholarship are always grateful and excited to meet us,” says Herm. “they think we’ve done a great thing for them, but we think they are the ones accomplishing great things for themselves. We’re just pleased to be a part of their lives in this way.” over the years, Kelley and Herm have stayed in touch with and mentored students who have been recipients of their NCC scholarship as well as students from the Children’s Home of easton who attend NCC. “It’s a way for us to continue teaching in a way, which is fun. It’s also a way for us to give back both to our community and our profession,” says Kelley. today, Herm and Kelley enjoy all the opportunities that retirement brings. they are “addicted travelers” and try to discover and explore at least one new place in the world each year. they also enjoy biking, ballroom dancing and the opportunity to find new adventures at home in the lehigh valley. “We believe in life-long learning,” says Kelley. “It’s the Northampton way!” u aNNual report 08/09 Northampton Community College 23 Joy m. lea Donald r. ’08 & ann lear, Jr. ’01 melvin e. & sandra I. lebo ’87 Winsor a. lee ’85 lehigh mutual Insurance Company Bob & linda J. lehr ’71 Jerilyn l. leiendecker sara J. leon ’07 Kenton W. ’73 & Jacqueline lerch Jean F. libricz thea m. lind Diane m. linde ’81 Douglas r. litzenberger ’80 Charleen a. loprete ’73 ronald & Judith s. lobach Karen a. lohrman Wallace m. long/long Funeral Home William C. long leslie H. loomis ’06 Wayne C. lopresti ’76 Barbara love Jeffrey a. & lori ann ludrof Dr. patricia a. ludwig Charles H. luecke ’71 paul a. ’06 & sharon m. lukatch John F. & susan l. macarthur, Jr. Joseph a. & Catherine macchia John & audrey s. macey ’70 macri & associates/Butch ’76 & susie macri James Devereux maguire & Beth spaziani maguire sidney l. mahler a. rashid & Jawa makhdomi robert l. & Kimberly W. manning elva mante ’02 Frank marakovits, III ’78 ruth marakovits lloyd p. & peggy m. marbach Kenneth a. & assunta m. marino michael C. marschewski ’88 margaret s. marsh ’81 samuel N. marsh edward J. & mary m. marshall Kathleen a. martin Nancy e. martin Dr. richard martin & susan C. Frick Cardelle & Dr. alberto Cardelle Dr. Bernard & grace Jean Fried Couple’s endowment honors family’s south side easton roots by katherine burton as vice president and chief financial officer for Flsmidth, tim vansyckle has traveled the globe. He’s a top leader for a company that employs more than 10,000 people worldwide and is known on every continent as the leading supplier of equipment and services to the international cement and minerals industry. But for tim, his biggest successes are local. growing up on the south side of easton, vansyckle was the first in his family to attend college, and thanks to his mom and dad, he graduated from lycoming College with a degree in accounting. “my parents instilled an appreciation for hard work and the value of higher education,” says vansyckle. “they said that hard work would pay off, and they were right.” today, tim has boys of his own, four sons, all in their 20s, including one son who is a student at NCC. “they’ve mostly left the coop,” he says, “but my wife and I are happy that they still keep in touch with mom and dad.” vansyckle’s connection to Northampton Community College began even before his son decided to enroll for classes. He was recruited to serve on the NCC Foundation board in 2006 by Foundation board member, steve Hovey, who is president of Corporate environments. more importantly to vansyckle, Hovey was a lycoming College classmate, fraternity brother and friend. “I couldn’t say no to steve,” vansyckle admits. “plus, I couldn’t turn down the chance to work with such a talented group of people as the ones who serve on the board.” vansyckle is a strong believer that community colleges give students a chance they may not have had otherwise. “some of our most talented engineers at Flsmidth got their start at Northampton. It gave them a great base for success.” to honor and thank his own parents for making his own success possible, he created the Burton & Catherine vansyckle scholarship endowment to help students from the south side of easton who have been involved in the Boys & girls Club. “the club gives kids a sense of competence and usefulness and belonging. those are some of the things that my parents gave to me.” according to vansyckle, one of the most fulfilling moments he’s had since joining the Northampton family has been meeting students selected to serve as NCC’s presidential ambassadors. “these students have so much talent. From here they could go anywhere.” u aNNual report 08/09 Northampton Community College 27 russell J.
