Whether it is a presentation by our Oscar-winning alumnus — Roger Ross Williams, or a talk about the demise of the daily newspaper, or a talent show produced by one of our many student clubs, each and every day, our campus is bustling with cultural programs, athletic events and community service projects. Years ago, we were concerned that there wasn’t enough to do on campus for our commuter population, but now our worries are about making sure we don’t have too many activities that compete with each other. The benefits of a robust campus life include all the learning that occurs when students are working together for a common cause or interacting with faculty and staff about a particular speaker or issue. You can see the transformation that takes place as students begin their president, northampton community college classes at Northampton as somewhat intimidated freshmen and leave confident in their abilities. Of special note this year was the incredible influence our international students had at our College. Not only did our international students fill leadership positions throughout the College, but they also developed countless relationships with U.S. students that will last a lifetime. As evidenced by the pages that follow, despite these very difficult economic times, our College is fiscally healthy, expanding every year, and constantly looking for ways to better serve our communities. Our graduates are well prepared for the work-force or to transfer, and they leave as civic-minded adults ready to contribute to the areas in which they live and work. I urge all of our supporters who receive this annual report to come to any of our campuses and experience what we enjoy every day — a community filled with excitement and learning. ◆ PUBLISHER NORTHAMPTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION 3835 GREEN POND ROAD BETHLEHEM, PA 18020 BRUCE PALMER NORTHAMPTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION BOARD CHAIRMAN SUSAN K. The graduate survey is conducted each year by the Career and Work/Life Services Office at Northampton Community College. TWO THOUSAND 9 TWO THOUSAND 10 5 MIDDLE STATES ACCREDITATION REVIEW Northampton Community College began work on the Periodic Review Report to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The Periodic Review is due five years into the College’s Middle States accreditation, which was granted in 2006. The College will provide the Commission a monitoring report by June 2011, documenting continued development and implementation of a comprehensive institutional strategic plan. The review report is a college-wide effort coordinated by Academic Affairs and Institutional Research offices. Accreditation attests that an institution has met the following criteria: ❚ That it has a mission appropriate to higher education; ❚ That it is guided by well-defined and appropriate goals, including goals for student learning; ❚ That is has established conditions and procedures under which its mission and goals can be realized; ❚ That it assesses both institutional effectiveness and student learning outcomes, and uses the results for improvement; ❚ That it is accomplishing its mission and goals substantially; ❚ That it is organized, staffed and supported so that it can be expected to continue to accomplish its mission and goals; and ❚ That it meets the eligibility requirements and standards of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. 6 TWO THOUSAND 9 TWO THOUSAND 10 TWO THOUSAND 9 TWO THOUSAND 10 7 A YEAR OF FIRSTS This year saw an impressive list of “firsts” added to the College’s story. 8 TWO THOUSAND 9 TWO THOUSAND 10 An NCC faculty member, Dr. Kiki Anastasakos (above), brought honors to the College when she was named Pennsylvania Professor of the Year by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. A new textbook lending program was launched, enabling students to save up to 60 percent on the cost of their books for some of the most popular courses. NCC was the first college in the Lehigh Valley to offer such a program. Nearly 3,000 books were rented during the program’s first year. New program offerings included middle-level education, web development, resort management, casino operations and dining room operations; and a new concentration in women’s and gender studies was added as an option for liberal arts majors. The men’s and women’s basketball teams made their debut in the National Junior College Athletic Association, enabling the student athletes to compete on a national level. The College celebrated its first alumnus to win an Academy Award, when Roger Ross Williams (below) debuted his documentary, “Music by Prudence,” to a packed Lipkin Theatre crowd. Fall credit enrollment topped 11,000 for the first time. TWO THOUSAND 9 TWO THOUSAND 10 9 10 TWO THOUSAND 9 TWO THOUSAND 10 STUDENT SUCCESS Northampton’s focus on student achievement earned recognition for the College as a leader in the national student completion movement by the Lumina Foundation for Education. The research the College has done, particularly in math education, has helped to reduce the number of students who drop out after their first semester and to increase the percentage of students who are able to complete an introductory math course successfully. Officials at the Lumina Foundation’s Achieving the Dream commended NCC for implementing initiatives to enhance the experience of first-year students, close achievement gaps, and strengthen advising for students in need of additional support. BOOST LEARNING SLIC and SLOC Outside their classrooms, NCC faculty came together in working groups to examine and discuss nuts and bolts data about how their students learn and what teaching methods are most effective. These initiatives took on the offbeat-sounding acronym names SLIC (Student Learning Improvement Conversations) and SLOC (Student Learning Outcomes Conversations). The initiatives’ focus is on changes instructors can make to improve learning, particularly in required courses that can be “gateways” for student progress. Led by Carolyn Bortz, dean of allied health, and English instructor Randy Boone, groups of faculty were formed to determine how changes in classroom techniques could improve student learning outcomes in different courses. As information continues to be compiled and analyzed, the results are shared back through the faculty participants for a continuous improvement feedback loop. Among the questions examined: ❚ What student learning related issues do you experience in your course or program? ❚ Are there academic speed bumps that students typically hit that stand in the way of their success or progress? ❚ Are there strategies or best practices that you have used and seen improvement in student learning? ❚ Are there strategies in the literature that you have implemented with positive results? Paul Kanjorski announce major funding commitments for proposed Monroe Campus Trailers provided extra classroom space on Monroe Campus where full-time enrollment grew by 26 percent last year. As spring session classes were getting started in January, major funding commitments for Monroe Campus were announced. U.S. Rep. Paul Kanjorski and Pa. Sen. Robert Mellow came to the College to announce the spending commitments. Headlines were made when the Pennsylvania Legislature passed a bill designating $2.4 million per year for 20 years to fund a new Monroe Campus. The College also received federal funding totaling $700,000 for scholarships, improved security, and for equipping a biotechnology laboratory on the new campus. The funds benefit students currently enrolled at the existing campus as well as future students at the planned new Monroe Campus. TWO THOUSAND 9 TWO THOUSAND 10 13 THE CAMPUS EXPERIENCE NCC students experience campuses alive with activities: Benefits of a robust campus life include all the learning that occurs when students work together for common causes, learning from each other as well as from faculty and staff. Visible transformations occur as these students participate in the daily life of the College. 14 TWO THOUSAND 9 TWO THOUSAND 10 MAKING THE MOST OF HIS SCHOLARSHIP Great education. Great professors. Great value. That’s what Dohl DiFebo was looking for when he started searching for colleges. “I considered other schools,” says the 2009 Bangor High School graduate, “but nobody else could give me the kind of opportunity NCC was offering.” DiFebo, who is majoring in Computer Aided Design, was selected to receive one of Northampton Community College’s SMaRT Scholarships. “I found out about the SMaRT Scholar program on Northampton’s Web site,” says DiFebo. “I never really thought I’d get it, but I applied anyway. I’m glad I did.” Underwritten by a grant to NCC from the National Science Foundation, the SMaRT Scholar program provides full scholarships along with academic and career guidance for outstanding students interested in science, technology, engineering and math. “The scholarship has made a huge difference,” says DiFebo. “I’ll finish my degree in two years. From there, I may pursue an engineering degree, but I’d like to get a job first and see what kind of skills my employer really needs.” Besides his computer and engineering pursuits, there are some decidedly non-technical features to DiFebo’s days. His family raises a large herd of grass-fed beef cattle on a 500-acre farm in Upper Mt. Bethel Township, Dohl DiFebo says nobody else could give him what NCC offers. Pennsylvania. In addition, DiFebo plants sweet corn, tomatoes and vegetables to sell at the produce stand he opened when he was 14. Finally, he helps out with R & R Lawn Service, a business that’s been in his family for 30 years. “My father opened the lawn service with $50 right after he graduated from high school. My dad didn’t have the opportunity to go to college, but he and my mom have made sure that my brother, Dane, and I wouldn’t miss it.” DiFebo has been offering agricultural advice to campus volunteers interested in starting a local community garden, and, in addition to taking several courses over the summer, he found time to participate in a corporate internship opportunity during July and August. “Professor Ed Csongradi e-mailed me after the end of spring semester to see if I’d like to join him to learn about a local engineering company that designs and manufactures equipment for the pharmaceutical industry. I knew it would be a great experience, and I said yes right away.” ◆ by Paul Acampora TWO THOUSAND 9 TWO THOUSAND 10 15 In celebration of Black History Month … Tabatha Robinson-Scott and the Northampton Dance Ensemble perform a tribute inspired by the life and work of American suffragist movement leader Alice Paul during the annual Martin Luther King Jr. “Reclaim the Dream” in Lipkin Theater. 16 TWO THOUSAND 9 TWO THOUSAND 10 FINANCIALS 2009 / 2010 FISCAL YEAR/UNAUDITED INCOME RESOURCES 99,795,000 5 % LOCAL SPONSORS / 5,345,000 36 % TUITION & FEES / 35,819,000 35 % FED, STATE, GRANT & OTHER / 33,921,000 8 % AUXILIARY ENTERPRISES / 8,454,000 16 % COMMONWEALTH OF PA / 16,256,000 INCOME APPLICATION 99,795,000 63 % EDUCATION & GENERAL/ 62,546,000 6 % TRANSFERS /5,954,000 8 % AUXILIARY ENTERPRISES / 7,798,000 17 % STUDENT AID / 17,088,000 6% CAPITAL & OTHER / 6,409,000 TWO THOUSAND 9 TWO THOUSAND 10 17 Bruce A. Palmer ’77 Chairman, Foundation Board 18 TWO THOUSAND 9 TWO THOUSAND 10 While it’s still a little early to tell, indications are that individual giving to higher education was down for the 2009-2010 year. Giving to the Northampton Community College Foundation followed that trend, with gifts to the annual fund down 5 percent. Our endowment, however, gained back a good portion of its value this year as you will see when you review our financial statements. Given the economic downturn from which we only now are beginning to recover, we consider ourselves lucky to have weathered this storm with only a modest decrease in support. And, in a year in which many organizations cut back on special event fundraising, the NCC Foundation, in partnership with Sands Casino Resort/Bethlehem, staged its most successful fundraising event ever, the inaugural Lehigh Valley Food and Wine Festival, featuring Chef Emeril Lagasse that attracted a crowd of nearly 1,000 and raised over $100,000. We are grateful to the Sands for this partnership, to Foundation Board members Mike Molewski and Bob DeSalvio, who co-chaired the event, and to the many local restaurants that participated. Plans are already underway to make next year’s event as successful. The major focus of the Foundation’s development team this year remained on meeting the financial benchmarks set by the College’s National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant. I’m proud to report that we have successfully raised the funds necessary to meet the second of five benchmarks set by the NEH. That benchmark required us to raise $414,600 in cash and pledges before July 31, 2010. As of June, we had surpassed that goal by more than $75,000. The most ambitious year of the challenges lies ahead of us with $446,950 needed by July of 2011. While those fundraising goals have been the focus of the advancement team at the College, the academic side of the house has been busy planning for the first year of programming. The theme for the first year, August 2011 through May 2012, was predetermined by a steering committee made up of College personnel and representatives of our six community partners. The first year’s programming will focus on the Civil War to coincide with the 150th anniversary commemoration of the Civil War. Organizations and agencies, including our community partners, are already planning events and activities that will relate to the 150th anniversary. Northampton’s NEH programming will be directed by Sol Levy, assistant professor of history, and focus on “The Meaning of Freedom: Civil War 1865 to Today.” Events being discussed include a theatre production, film series, linking to existing Martin Luther King Jr. events in January, student debates, forums and enhancements to our existing course on the Civil War. Finally, one of the year’s highlights will include the possibility of bringing someone of the stature of Doris Kearns Goodwin, James McPherson or David McCullough to campus in March of 2012 as the culminating event. Support for the NEH Challenge Grant is representative of the broad-based support Northampton enjoys in the Lehigh Valley and Monroe communities. This broad base of support is one of the distinctive characteristics that sets Northampton apart from others. Northampton remains one of the leading community colleges in the country because of your generosity and your belief in and support of us and our students, and for that we once again thank you. ◆ Birkas ’75 EDUCATED TO GIVE Giving back comes naturally to Chuck and Gwen Peischl. That and a love of education. Together, they’re nearly a family tradition. Gwen’s father was Herb Cobley, one of NCC’s founders. The Peischls honored Cobley by gifting a plaque at NCC’s annual Tribute Garden dedication ceremony. Speaking at the April event, Chuck noted that his father-in-law had begun his career as a physics teacher; but by the time of the College’s founding, he had been hired by the Nazareth Area School District as its superintendent. Cobley was one of a handful of school administrators who realized the need for a community college and set out to make Northampton a reality. “He understood just what community colleges can do,” Peischl says. “Not only what the degree means to the working world, but how education enhances the quality of an individual’s life.” Gwen says her father “was truly proud to be one of Northampton’s founders. I think it was one of his greatest accomplishments.” The Peischls’ own contributions are significant. Chuck Peischl is a former NCC truste and has been a member of the College’s Foundation Board since 2000. The list of his other involvements could fill the rest of this profile. But his stint as Nazareth’s mayor is among his earliest. “It was Gwen who started it off,” Chuck says, “when she said: Instead of bewailing things we’re not happy with, maybe we need to get involved and change them.” Peischl served two terms as mayor, and he is proud of the things his administration accomplished. “Even though she wasn’t mayor, Gwen was part of it, too,” he adds. “There were plenty of sacto be made. It was a real team effort.” For Chuck and Gwen Peischl, NCC has always rificesGwen has her own “giving back” list. In addition to her been a family priority. full-time guidance counselor job and her full-time role as a mother of two, Gwen made a commitment to historical preservation at the Whitefield House in Nazareth, home to Moravian history, where she served on the historical society board for nearly 10 years. The Peischls love their hometown. But they also love to travel – not, however, as typical tourists. They continue learning by immersing themselves in a given culture. And toward that end, they often both attend NCC for conversational Italian, French, Spanish, and even Mandarin. Add to their language courses those they take for self-improvement, like Gwen’s halfdozen computer classes. It is obvious the Peischls love NCC for its commitment to degreebound students and to life-long learners alike. And they do an excellent job of practicing the education they preach. ◆ by James L. Langston ’87 A MAGIC IN THE CARING Caring, for most of us, defines itself in ever-widening circles. It begins at home with family and travels outward, to friends; then perhaps to our surrounding neighborhood, and on, to include one’s country and, hopefully, our entire world. The late philanthropist Louise Moore Pine seemed to possess an almost magical ability to collapse those dividing circles into one. She easily drew people to her and sincerely treated them all with love and respect; as if everyone became part of her extended family. That ability was, no doubt, a reflection of the strength of her true blood family ties. Pat McNamara, Pine’s niece, grew up observing her aunt’s affections for those around her. Pine (or, at the time, Louise Moore) made summers sweet, inviting everyone to Slate Post Farm, the home she shared with Hugh Moore, her first husband. She showed her niece and siblings the joys of farm life, of long summer days complete with horses and a pond for lots of swimming; and too, there were weeks chock-full of Bushkill Park’s rides, petting zoos, outings to New York City and a host of other things to put wide-eyed delight into a child. “It was a magical time,” says McNamara. “She was like that with all of my siblings and cousins – everyone from all sides of the family were welcomed and shown a grand time. She was the perfect aunt.” It was as Louise Wilde that she first saw Slate Post Farm, 118 acres of which the Lehigh Valley now knows as Louise Moore Park, in Easton. She came to live at the farm in 1946, after she married Moore, the farm’s owner. Moore was the founder of Easton’s Dixie Cup; its giant replica of the famous paper cup atop the plant was a near-icon of the Lehigh Valley for many years. He passed away in 1972. It wasn’t until she married her third husband, international Originally known as Slate Post Farm, the Louise lawyer Roswell Dean Pine, that Louise took the surname she Moore Park in Easton was home to late would have until her own passing in December 2009. A year after Hugh Moore’s passing, Pine deeded most of Slate Post Farm philanthropist Louise Moore. to Northampton County for the creation of Louise Moore Park (according to Moore’s wishes). A clause in that contract allowed her lifetime residency in the historic home, built in 1822. “When I think about the park, I think of another thing that impressed me about my aunt,” says McNamara. “And that was her humility. She was incredibly humble and always deferred to her husband’s achievements, always minimizing her own contributions. It took 10 years to create the park, and she was at the head of the project all the way. But she never gave herself the credit she deserved.” Pine’s accomplishments are many. She met with leaders of our community and such DONOR PROFILE continued on page 33 TWO THOUSAND 9 TWO THOUSAND 10 31 Daniel M. & Vicki L. Larimer Marianne Laub ’78 Natalie R. Lauer ’06 Mary E. And yet, she was truly comfortable in her own skin: “She could come home,” McNamara says, “take off her business suit, put on an apron and be our Aunt Louise.” Perhaps Pine thought of her charity work the way Hugh Moore did, simply that everyone has a debt to society. Pine liked to quote Moore about their farm, that deeding it to the county was “a payment on account of that debt.” Dr. Richard Richardson was NCC’s first president; he guided the College’s growth through its first 10 years. “I first met Louise [and her second husband, Dr. Van Vleck] at a fishing weekend at Pocono Lake Preserve,” says Richardson. “She was easily the most stylish and elegant opening-day fly fisherman the Tobyhanna had ever seen.” Richardson was impressed with the “charm, wit, enthusiasm and persistence that so characterized her every endeavor.” Richardson also noted the charming fisherwoman’s “growing interest in Northampton Community College.” Thankfully, for the College, Pine’s interest continued to grow. Her estate recently donated a million dollars to the College’s Foundation for various needs. “It’s an enormous help for our students,” says NCC’s director of development and student scholarships, Paul Acampora. “The endowment is going to generate thousands of dollars every year just for scholarships. And since endowments Thankfully, for the College, Pine’s interest continued last forever, Pine is going to make it possible for hundreds and hundreds of local students to afto grow. Her estate recently donated a ford a college education.” Dr. Robert Kopecek, NCC’s second million dollars to the College’s Foundation for various needs. president, who retired in 2003 after a tenure of 26 years, also felt the magic of Louise Moore Pine’s charm. “Mrs. Pine was a most gracious person,” he says. “She was a caring person, who had a remarkable memory. Without fail, when she met either my wife Sue or me, she never failed to ask about our children, and to then recall other facts about them.” Kopecek also talks about Pine’s obvious concern with the well-being of our community and its institutions, and notes that “without question, she would help them in any way she could.” How do you define that magic in a person so giving and yet so sincerely humble? Is it, as Dr. Richardson says, “charm, wit and enthusiasm?” Or, as a recent award bio of her noted, that she understood how “sometimes, ’community’ means all of the nations of the world?” Or perhaps it is as Pat McNamara says: “Both my Aunt Louise and Uncle Hugh had a sense of things much greater than themselves. They were truly philanthropists in their hearts.” Which is to say, it is simply the magic of a caring heart. ◆ by James L. TWO THOUSAND 9 TWO THOUSAND 10 43 OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO YOU A DONOR BILL OF RIGHTS Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights: I. To be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends to use the donated resources, and of its capacity to use the donations effectively for their intended purposes. II. To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities. III. To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements. IV. To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given. V. To receive appropriate acknowledgement and recognition. VI. To be assured that information about their donation is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law. VII. To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature. VIII. To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors. IX: To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share. X. To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers. DEVELOPED BY: American Association of Fund Raising Counsel (AAFRC) Association of HealthCare Philanthropy (AHP) Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) National Society of Fund Raising Executives (NSFRE) The Foundation has the responsibility to be accountable to our constituencies: to our board of directors, who serve without remuneration; to Northampton Community College and its leadership, faculty, staff and students; to donors; to our volunteers; and to our own staff. One of the ways in which we do so is to make accessible materials that we believe should be available to those who care about the mission and success of the Northampton Community College Foundation. WE MAKE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS AVAILABLE: ■ Financial audit conducted by our external auditor. ■ An annual report of giving and activities, including an honor roll of donors. ■ Our policies on disbursement of gift funds. ■ Investment policies and expenditure guidelines. ■ Our action plan establishing priorities. YOU MAY OBTAIN THESE ITEMS BY WRITING OR CALLING: Office of the Executive Director Northampton Community College Foundation 3835 Green Pond Road Bethlehem, PA 18020-7599 610/861-5451 In spite of our best efforts to avoid them, mistakes occur.
