March 31, 2008 From the Office of the President – Dean Jacobs Re-Appointed The School is pleased to forward the following communication received by Smith College President, Carol Christ: “I am pleased to announce that Carolyn Jacobs, School for Social Work Dean and Elizabeth Marting Treuhaft Professor, has been reappointed as Dean of the School for Social Work. Carolyn became Dean in 2003, having served as Acting Dean from 2000 to 2003. Carolyn has provided excellent leadership to the School for Social Work, and I am delighted that she has agreed to serve an additional five-year term.” Please Vote – Deadline is This Friday! Continuing Education Summer Seminars 2008 Information regarding Continuing Education Summer seminars is now online. Over 30 courses are being offered in June and July. Combat Stress: Understanding the Challenges, Preparing for the Future – Registrations filling up! This timely conference focuses on the mental health needs and practice approaches for soldiers, veterans and their families including the complexity of their situations (e.g. traumatic brain injury, polytrauma, suicide prevention, PTSD and secondary trauma). Caregiving challenges for family members and clinicians, the role of spirituality and community support are included as well. The conference is free of charge to any U.S. veteran or current member of the military. Contemplative Clinical Practice: An Advanced Certificate Program in Spirituality and Social Work Practice Now in its second year, the Contemplative Clinical Practice Certificate deepens the clinician’s awareness of the sacred dimension of his/her work by exploring his/her own religious histories and spiritual practices, the clients’ spiritual beliefs and practices, and the clinical relationship itself. Calling all Alumni - Volunteers Needed Each year, alumni are surveyed determine individuals interested in volunteering. We do not assume that what you were willing to do last year automatically carries over to your interest or capabilities this year, so you are asked to fill out a new form each year. To obtain a form go to: http://www.smith.edu/ssw/alumni/documents/2008VolOpps-form.doc Fellowship Opportunity - Health and Aging Policy Fellows Program Open to physicians, nurses and social workers at all career stages, supported by The Atlantic Philanthropies and administered by Columbia University, this national program seeks to provide professionals in health and aging with the experience and skills necessary to make a positive contribution to the development and implementation of health policies that affect older Americans. The program offers two different tracks for individual placement: (1) a residential track that includes a nine-to-12-month placement in Washington, D.C. or at a state agency (as a legislative assistant in Congress, a professional staff member in an executive agency or in a policy organization); and (2) a non-residential track that includes a health policy project and brief placement(s) throughout the year at relevant sites. Core program components focused on career development and professional enrichment are provided for fellows in both tracks. The application deadline for 2008-2009 is May 1, 2008.
