VI. OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS 31. Why did you choose this program? Text Response Exposure to Mandarin was my primary motive. I'm Taiwanese American, but I never felt too strongly tied to my heritage. I felt like it was a good opportunity to get in touch with my roots and really immerse myself in my culture and the everyday life of a regular Taiwanese student. How, if at all, does the structure of the courses differ from those at USC? Did you like or dislike these differences? Text Response All of my courses very highly, if not totally, group based. My USC courses are much more individual based. The teachers are not very good at explaining concepts. Much of the courses need to be self taught for this reason. Memorization is a very strong basis to learning in Taiwan as opposed to more of an understanding of concepts at USC. Also, classes at NTU are 3 hours each, once a week. It makes it hard to concentrate for that long a period of time. I prefer USC's course structure more. Statistic Total Responses Value 2 26. 35. Are there courses or professors that you would particular recommend? Please explain: Text Response Modern Banking(GMBA course). Student presentations every session, but felt was beneficial to improve presentation skills. The professor was also very knowledgeable and experienced in the world of banking. None of the courses I took. Statistic Total Responses Value 2 27. 36. Are there courses or professors that you would advise against taking? Please explain: Text Response n/a DO NOT take Application to Financial Modeling. It was his first year teaching at NTU, and his English is horrible. He literally read off the online notes, and the course work is very difficult to understand without a strong grasp in accounting and finance. He, himself, had a hard time answering questions because he didn't understand the material. Statistic Total Responses Value 2 28. 37. Has participation in this program influenced your academic or career goals? How? Text Response Since most of my courses had many graduate and GMBA students, I felt like my personal knowledge/ability as a student was more or less equal with them. I realized that I will plan to pursue a postgraduate degree only if I have to for symbolic reasons, just to have the degree. I also learned that i-banking is overrated and will be focusing on a career involving international business more so than finance in particular, especially given the current economic situation. If anything, I fell in love with the Taiwanese culture. They really welcome Taiwanese Americans, and have many career outlets available for them. I may consider working abroad in Taiwan after I graduate. I think I would be able to obtain a higher position in a shorter amount of time and learn more than I would in the U.S. Statistic Total Responses Value 2 29. Did you speak the host language, or receive any language training in the host language prior to, or during your semester abroad? Please explain. Text Response Going out at night, mingling with the locals, and having various taiwanese girlfriends Of course. We traveled to different parts of Taiwan to experience different cultural backgrounds and traditions. Also, I joined an outside dance studio where I made many local friends. They really made me experience Taiwan like a local. Statistic Total Responses Value 2 34. 42. What percentage of students on the campus of your host country (would you estimate) actively speak English? Text Response 20% maybe about 40% can speak fluently Statistic Total Responses Value 2 35. 43. How would you recommend that students prepare for language differences abroad? Text Response Take advantage of the free Chinese language courses offered by NTU. It obviously would help if you knew any Chinese before you arrive to Taiwan. Be open-minded and patient with locals trying to practice their English with you. Just ask questions when you don't understand. Taiwanese people are always very willing to help foreigners despite the language barriers. Maybe consider making a few local friends because many of the signs are not in English as well. The locals, however, really cater to helping foreigners when in need. Statistic Total Responses Value 2 36. Is there any aspect of the program that you would like to see changed or different? (VERY IMPORTANT!) Text Response Wider selection of English-instructed courses. My biggest complaint was registering for courses. Not only was the selection somewhat limited, but also the space in the classes. This was a frustrating process. I would really like NTU to hire better teachers. I really felt like that was their greatest downfall. Also, it would be nice if NTU arranged more get togethers or travel plans for the exchange students. Students only see each other once a week in class. Text Response Despite essentially being stranded on an island, there is much places to travel to within Taiwan. For international traveling, perhaps it is not the ideal country to do so. I didn't do as much traveling as I had wished, however, I just traveled at the way beginning to the far south(Kenting) and at the way end to Hualien. In the middle of the semester, I flew to Beijing for the weekend to visit some of my Beijing friends. I traveled a lot within Taiwan such as places like Kenting, Sun Moon Lake, Taichung, Yilan, Bitan, Danshui, Beitou, Yangming Shan and Jiufen. It' a beautiful country with city, ocean, nature all in one package. I also travelled out to Hong Kong. I did more of my traveling the first couple months. Once midterms picked up, there wasn't much time to go out. Statistic Total Responses Value 2 46. 51. Did the structure of the host institution's course schedule foster travel opportunity or prevent it? Why? Text Response It fostered it because each of the 5 classes only met once a week, and I think most students did not have class on Fridays. Definitely fostered it. Classes are each only once a week, which makes the material covered very limited. Statistic Total Responses Value 2 47. 52. Do you have any tips or information about traveling while abroad that you would like to share with upcoming exchange students preparing for their trip? Text Response Travel throughout the island because there are a lot of places to see. The trains and buses are cheap too. You live and die by the MRT (the metro system in Taipei). It is really efficiant and cheap. If you are able to figure out the bus system (usually ask locals), you can definitely save even more. It all depends on how much you are willing to spend. High Speed Rail is faster, but far more expensive. Also, you'll definitely be doing a lot of walking in Taipei. I highly suggest it because the city is not that big to begin with. The city is bustling with life and you really can't experience Taipei any other way. Most importantly, try the food wherever you go. Taiwan is ALL ABOUT THE FOOD. Don't worry too much about food sanitation. Everything is delicious and cheap; especially street food at night markets. Statistic Total Responses Value 2 48. 53. The people in general are very trustworthy and kind hearted. Statistic Total Responses Value 2 50. 55. Text Response cheap and good chinese food. overall convenience and ease of life in Taipei. Experiencing Taiwan and definitely the food. Statistic Total Responses Value 2 55. 60. What was the most difficult part? Text Response Not so much for me, but perhaps the language barrier for other exchange students. Being away from friends and family at home. I got homesick really often. It was also harder for me to make friends because majority of the students in my program were European. They tended to stick together. I made a few friends that were in EAP(which is mostly UC kids), but it was hard to really be close to them because they had very different class schedules. I had to balance the two out. Statistic Total Responses Value 2 56. 61. Describe a situation that you experienced as a result of culture shock or cultural misunderstanding. How did you resolve it? Text Response Indirectness of the Taiwanese people; tend to be afraid of confrontation. It's just something you(especially Americans) have to accept and adjust to. I suppose I always expected Taiwan to be a rather conservative country. I didn't realize that they were quite big on gay rights. I had many encounters with females who dressed and acted as men. At first, I felt really overwhelmed by the lesbian population. But as I made more and more local friends in Taiwan, I began to look up to the way they treated homosexuality. It is really no different than any other relationship. I hung out with all sorts of people and found myself caring less and less about our differences. It was really eye opening. Statistic Total Responses Value 2 57. 62. Describe something that you are proud of having accomplished during your stay. Text Response Partying a lot and enjoying myself while in Taipei. I found a place where I can say is truly a home away from home. Statistic Total Responses Value 2 58. 63. What do you wish you had known about before leaving? Text Response Strict policies in the dorms. not that I can think of Statistic Total Responses Value 2 59. 64. Do you have any travel tips to share? Text Response See the rest of Taiwan. Bring tissue/toilet paper everywhere (many bathrooms don't carry it), trash cans are very very rare, only take the taxi if you have to, travel within taiwan using the bus system (way cheaper), try everything, don't talk and laugh too loudly (I got shushed quite often) Statistic Total Responses Value 2 60. 65. What would you like to say to the students going after you? Text Response I was overall satisfied with the program. If learning or being exposed to Mandarin is a major objective, then this is the best Marshall IEP for you (even better than Singapore I'd assume). Don't be afraid to just take it all in. The people who really missed out were the ones who stuch with only the familiar. Taipei has so much to offer if you just step out of your comfort zone. 99% people are nice(except when they are driving). Statistic Total Responses Value 2 61. 66. Any final thoughts... Text Response Pass your classes and have fun! You'll love it there. It's one of those hot spots that are really under the radar. You can enjoy a great new cultural experience in a up and coming nation that hasn't become overly commercialized. It's a city that keeps culture close to its heart when considering expanding into a greater nation. Statistic Total Responses Value 2
