Tutorial 6: Resource Cycles and Value Chains
Today’s topics of discussion:
1. Discuss the role of the oil sands for Canada/Alberta. Past, present, and future.
2. Discuss solar energy as a renewable resource. Where can it be used?
3. Discuss the nature and implications of the global division of food production.
4. Should urban land use policy protect prime agricultural land or should we let the market rule?
Next week’s tutorial questions:
1. “Made in Canada” or “Made in USA” labels are great marketing ploys. What does this mean
in today’s world of manufacturing? Do a search of “Made in USA” on the Federal Trade
Commission web page.
2. Just-in-time production. What is it? What are its strengths? What are its problems?
3. What is the Canadian geography of manufacturing? Provide trends in national manufacturing
as well as a comparison across (at least) 3 provinces. See the Canadian Oxford World Atlas and
Wikipedia.
4. Are manufacturing government bailouts any different than bailouts for resource industries?
Discuss.
