School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh Sample Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) for a hypothetical first-year course Students will acquire and/or demonstrate via assessed coursework • a broad knowledge of the main areas and features of Canadian history • ability to carry out routine lines of historical enquiry through the application of routine study skills • ability critically to evaluate evidence-based analyses and/or syntheses in relation to routine and defined historical problems • proficiency in written communication skills, including citation/referencing and bibliographic skills • initiative and some autonomy in the acquisition and mobilisation of historical materials, including primary written evidence and secondary scholarship Students will acquire and/or demonstrate via tutorial attendance and performance • detailed knowledge in some areas of Canadian history • an outline knowledge of major concepts, issues and research practices core to the study of Canadian history • the taking of significant responsibility under guidance, via adequate preparation, participation and interaction with others, for contributing positively to the tutorial experience
