UVIS: Science Highlights
This clear filter Imaging Subsystem camera
image (A) shows Titan in partial eclipse and
illuminated by light reflected around the edge of
Saturn and its rings, which are downward.
Background star trails and cosmic ray events
are apparent. With light from Saturn and the
rings subtracted (B) and the intensity
enhanced, a glow is seen emanating from both
shaded and illuminated regions of the
atmosphere. The grid overlay shows the
location of the south pole and the dashed
circles show the top of Titan’s haze layer at 300
km (190 miles) altitude and the top of a fainter
airglow layer extending to 1000 km (625 miles)
altitude.

Science Highlights (from this quarter: Aug – Oct2012)
Quarterly
•
EUV and FUV emissions from N and N2 were observed at one of three eclipse events.
•
Only the strongest emissions were observed, relative to what is seen from the illuminated
atmosphere.
