UVIS: Science Highlights
This graph shows the optical depth of the largest density wave in Saturn’s rings (the Janus 2:1 density wave) in
red, and a mean particle size calculated from variance of the occultation data (blue). The blue curve dips at the
peaks of the density wave indicating that small particles are knocked off larger particles in strong collisions in those
waves, while in the troughs the particles are larger due to clumping. (Colwell)

UVIS: Accomplishments
Science Highlights (from this quarter: May – July 2013)
–
Colwell: Analysis of ring stellar occultation statistics (the variance of the data) shows the production
of small particles in density wave peaks presumably due to more vigorous collisions in those
regions. The variance also shows smaller particles in the so-called haloes around the strongest
density waves in the A ring, demonstrating a link between particle size and spectral properties
associated with these waves.
–
Colwell: A comparison of UVIS and VIMS optical depths in the rings using stellar occultation data
shows that VIMS sees a different optical depth due to their longer wavelength of observation and
smaller field of view. We have utilized this to improve our model of self-gravity wakes in the rings
and derive from the combined data the fraction of small particles (sub-cm) in the gaps between the
self-gravity wakes across the A ring.
