Worksheet for Premeds at Xavier University of Louisiana Pre-Registration for Spring To be completed by Freshmen and turned in before leaving the workshop in the fall . (updated 7/31/15) 1. Who is ultimately responsible for ensuring that all courses required for graduation from Xavier as well as courses that are required/ recommended for application to medical, dental, etc. school are satisfied? 2. Students who plan on taking the MCAT are encouraged to take no more than 14 semester hours during the Spring of Junior Year. Why is this the case? 3. When is pre-registration for the Spring 2016 semester? 4. XU’s Premed Advisers do NOT recommend that students drop courses/retake courses in which they can get a grade of “C” or better*. Why is this the case? *NOTE: If you ever consider dropping a course, please make sure that in addition to #4 above, you also consider what impact doing so might have on your financial aid, scholarship eligibility, etc. 5. According to the “Classification of Students” section in the most recent University Catalog (page 39), a student must have completed 29 hours to be considered a SOPHOMORE. What else is required for a student to gain sophomore status? 6. According to page 42 of the 2014-2016 University Catalog, when are students encouraged to make decisions about withdrawing from (i.e. dropping) courses? 7. What grade are students expected to earn in each course in their major in order for the course to “count” toward their degree requirements (see page 69 of the 2014-2016 University Catalog)? 8. According to the curriculum outline in the most recent University Catalog, how many total hours would a student need to obtain a degree (on the premed track) in… 1) Biology? 2) Chemistry? 3) Psychology? The table below lists the basic minimum REQUIRED 40 semester hours of science and math courses for most medical, dental, etc. school, as well as four (4) additional courses that are currently being recommended for students who plan on taking the newly revised MCAT. It is recommended that you complete these courses BY THE END OF JUNIOR YEAR (i.e. BEFORE you take the necessary entrance exam and apply to health professions school). Next to each course, use a “√” to indicate when you took (or plan to take) each course at XU (refer to the appropriate edition of the University Catalog). NOTE #1: If you bypassed any course (e.g. Pre-Cal), put “PC” in the semester you would have taken it. NOTE #2: If you have concerns about completing your coursework by Spring 2018 because you had to take remedial classes, didn’t enroll in science classes this semester, etc., please speak with your academic adviser and PM Office staff about your plans to get “caught-up.” Required Course Course at XU General Biology I BIOL 1230 General Biology I lab General Biology II BIOL 1230LB General Biology II lab General Chemistry I BIOL 1240LB General Chemistry I lab General Chemistry II General Chemistry II lab Organic Chemistry I CHEM 1011LB Organic Chemistry I lab Organic Chemistry II Organic Chemistry II lab General Physics I CHEM 2230LB General Physics I lab General Physics II PHYS 2010LB General Physics II lab College-level Math PHYS 2020LB Fall16 Spr17 Fall17 Spr18 Other (Semester/Year) Fall15 Spr16 Fall16 Spr17 Fall17 Spr18 Other (Semester/Year) CHEM 1010/1010DR CHEM 1020/1020DR CHEM 1021LB CHEM 2210/2210DR CHEM 2220/2220DR CHEM 2240LB PHYS 2010 PHYS 2020 College-level Math College-level Math MATH 1070 (Intro to Calculus) Additional Recommended Courses for the MCAT!!!!
