next » highway 7 east Issue 3 | July 2012 Our future gets closer every day The vivaNext plan is taking shape. In 2011, construction started on the Highway 7 rapidway, between Bayview and Warden. When completed in 2014, Viva vehicles will have their own dedicated lanes and transit travel times will improve significantly. Bringing this plan to life is not without its challenges. Construction, in particular, is messy and disruptive, with its shifting lanes, signage and traffic delays. We appreciate your patience and understanding, and are working hard all summer to complete as much as possible. York Region is well on its way towards a modern rapid transit network that will help accommodate future population growth and economic prosperity. These, in turn, will provide local residents with more choices for housing, recreation and shopping. Over time, Highway 7 will feel like an urban space, with trees, pedestrian-friendly boulevards, outdoor furniture and dedicated bike lanes. In short, a welcoming place where people from York Region and beyond will come to work, live, shop and play. 5. Like all new vivastations, this one will be passengerfriendly and provide greater comfort, convenience and accessibility. For improved visibility, roof and side panels will be made of reflective tinted glass and arrival/departure screens will display real-time schedule info. Raised platforms will provide near-level boarding, eliminating the need to climb steps or lift objects. The platform length will also be extended to accommodate multiple Viva vehicles, which will make it easier to get on and off the bus. For improved access and comfort, the station will feature an enclosed elevator and staircase that connect north-south service on Bayview to east-west service on Highway 7— known as the Bayview Towers. Construction of the Bayview Towers is scheduled to be completed by late 2012. In the meantime, pedestrians can continue to use the temporary stairs and walkway to access the temporary westbound stop. Other key features of the stations include temperature and motion-activated heaters, and a fully enclosed waiting area. There will also be security surveillance, energy-efficient lighting and ample seating, both inside and out. The canopies are coming Shop 7 With construction well underway, the reality of the new rapid transit system is starting to feel closer than ever. By the end of the project, we will have 11 new vivastations, with each having two platforms (one eastbound and one westbound). During construction, your local merchants and small business owners want to remind you to keep shopping along Highway 7. In fact, there’s no change in how you get to all your favourite stores, restaurants and entertainment venues. Let’s all continue to support each other during this exciting period of growth and change. Construction going East Leslie Station Overall we’re making great progress. It’s exciting to see several rapidway vivastations already taking shape, and you’ll see lots more progress by the end of the summer as we continue to build our world-class transit system. The crews will be busy with sewer installation, sidewalk and boulevard installation, paving and line painting. During this work, as we did in the west section, traffic lanes will be shifted to accommodate each side of the road widening. Road and boulevard widening at some intersections will be completed by this fall. Another major piece of work you’ll see happening is the widening of Apple Creek Bridge (just east of Fairburn Drive). Utility relocations are almost done, while centre median removal and temporary signal work have been completed at most intersections. In addition, rapidway and station construction will begin this fall and end by 2014.
