Course Prerequisites: Open to students who have successfully completed Romanian Level 1 or who can demonstrate equivalent
competence.
Academic Level: Intermediate
Course Unit Value: 1 (2 half-course units, taught in conjunction).

Weekly Contact Hours: 4
Compulsory for: Romanian and East European Studies, Russian and Romanian, Russian with Romanian, Modern Romanians combined
degrees of which Romanian is a component.
Pass required for: Progression to Year Abroad/Romanian Level 3
Open to: All SSEES undergraduates, affiliate students, also UCL undergraduates, subject to timetable and resourcing constraints
Module Outline
This is a course for students who have successfully completed Romanian Level 1, or who can demonstrate equivalent competence in
Romanian. The course consists of two components, comprehension and production, each of which has the value of 0.5 of a course-unit
(see Course Details above). Both components are taught in conjunction.
At the end of the module you should have fulfilled the following aims and objectives
Aims:

to build on the knowledge of Romanian already acquired and to attain (in all Romanian skills) a level of competence at which you can
function effectively in a wide range of situations

to read texts in Romanian in the next stage of your degree (in courses requiring reading of literary and other texts)

to use Romanian effectively during your year abroad

to develop awareness of problems of translation

to develop awareness of and interest in wider aspects of Romania and societies where Romanian is spoken

to gain a sound linguistic foundation for the Romanian Level 3 Course.
Objectives:

to understand a wide range of authentic spoken and written Romanian from predictable topic areas; extract required information and
record it accurately and coherently in English

manipulate spoken and written Romanian with appropriate and accurate use of lexis and grammatical structures in a variety of
contexts and registers; speak with confidence and accuracy appropriate to this level about many aspects of Romania, its life and
culture

demonstrate understanding of translation by discussing problems of specific translations from and into Romanian; successfully
translate a range of texts from and into Romanian

demonstrate knowledge and active use of more complex grammatical structures and a wide range of vocabulary in Romanian.

Assessment Style: Examination
Romanian Level 2A: Aural (45 minutes); written (3 hours); Romanian Level 2B: Oral (20 minutes); written (3 hours)
Assessment Weighting: Oral (15%); aural (15%); written (70%)
Romanian Level 2A: Aural (20%); written (80%); Romanian Level 2B: Oral (20%); written (80%)
Feedback
Examination: Students will be permitted access to markers comments on individual scripts in line with the SSEES Policy on Examination
Feedback.
