BSC Mission Statement
Our mission is to improve the retention, persistence, and success of basic skills students
BSC Scope/Function
To recommend and support educational programs, student support services, and matriculation policies that enhance
retention, persistence, and academic success of basic skills students.
1. To promote the use of effective practices in developmental education for administrative, student services, and
instructional programs.
2. To provide professional development regarding effective practices in developmental education.
3. To work with Institutional Research in tracking basic skills students from entry to completion.
4. To assess and evaluate the programs designed to improve student success.
5. To allocate and oversee expenditures of BSI categorical funds.

List of Data to
consider for BSC
"Program Review"
The committee discussed potential data needed to review the basic
skills “program”. Additional information needed may include:
Capturing the number of students placing at the basic skills
level;
The persistence of students placed a certain level;
Using a student satisfaction survey concept to analyze tutoring
services;
Percentage of students taking assessment and when they are
assessed;
When students took the appropriate basic skills class (1st
semester, 2nd semester, 2nd year);
Students who repeated basic skills classes
The committee agreed that work should continue to revise the basic
skills committee website (minutes, agendas, meeting dates, grant
proposal form). Mary Grace will contact the web master to continue
the work.
The committee agreed to meet during a summer retreat setting to
develop the foundation of the basic skills plan. The retreat is
scheduled for June 7th from 9am to 1pm at the downtown site.
