CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
This class will introduce students to intaglio printmaking. It is designed for students who are interested in
drawing and expanding their drawing skills with printmaking techniques. The techniques will include black
line, tone, and a variety of texture-generating processes. Students will examine artistic concerns for
paper, inks, and archival preservation of art work. Students will discover the meaning of “an original print.”
May be repeated to a maximum of six units.
Note:
Repeatability justified, since course content differs each time it is offered and skills or
proficiencies are enhanced by supervised repetition and practice within class periods.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
1. prepare and etch an image into zinc plate.
2. print a small edition of impressions from an etched plate.
3. prepare, etch, and print tonal and textural images, using aquatint and a range of other acid-resist
techniques.
4. appreciate and discriminate in the use of a variety of etching techniques to create original printed
images.
5. curate and display prints in a professional and archivally sound manner.
