College of the Redwoods CURRICULUM PROPOSAL DISTANCE EDUCATION COURSE Renewable every five years Date: April 2, 2008 1. Division: MSE 2. Course ID and Number: Math 25 3. Course Title: College Trigonometry 4. Distance Education Method: Instructional TV on cable Interactive TV on videoconference Online 5. Describe in detail how this course will apply the same standards of course quality as a traditional classroom course (attach course outline and syllabus). The course will be organized and delivered primarily via the course web site. Instruction is provided by readings from the textbook, practice problems from the textbook, and supplementary material available online. Assessment (including homework and exams) will be conducted by the use of written work and a sophisticated online mathematical testing system. Most of the learning in a mathematics class is accomplished through extensive problem-solving. In this regard, the use of the online testing system provides several benefits. Homework assignments and exams are graded immediately, giving instant feedback to the students. Solutions are provided for the questions that are incorrect, thus allowing students to identify their mistakes. Students can be provided with many more practice problems if they need it. It is also easier for the instructor to identify those areas that are giving trouble to many of the students, and subsequently spend more time working with students on those areas. Electronic communication (email and online discussion forums) will supplement or replace in-class communication, but this works well because answers can be given immediately rather than waiting for the next class. While learning outcomes for the distance course are the same as for the on-campus version of the course, this course structure also promotes better learning by allowing the students to take a more active role in their learning process. 6. Describe how this course will include regular effective contact between the instructor and students. Instructor initiated contact will take place through course web site, email, and online discussion forums, along with some use of phone and fax. Written homework is Curriculum Approval: April 8, 2005 (rev.11/8/05) Academic Senate Approval: May 6, 2005 May 29, 2016 returned to the students with extensive comments and an opportunity to rewrite the assignment. This approach helps improve the students' mathematical writing ability. 7. Describe how standard methods of assessment will be adapted to the distance education format. The methods of assessment are the same as for the on-campus version of the course, as both online and written work are used. However, more of the assessment will be carried out using the online testing system. Online exams are always proctored, thereby ensuring that the same level of academic standards is preserved.
