Discussion: 1. Justine Shaw explained students that plan on transferring and getting a four year degree in Anthropology degree should take this course. Students that transferred without the lab had to retake the course at the CSU level because there was no lab component. 2. Franz Rulofson asked why the course wasn’t a lecture/lab combination course. Justine Shaw said the lab component tends to discourages students that are not pursuing a four‐year anthropology degree. 3. One section of the lab would be scheduled in the spring and students from both the fall and spring sections of ANTH‐1 could enroll. 4. Harry Pyke and Jay Dragten said that if a student takes ANTH‐1 and ANTH‐1B the course could count as a biological science (Area B2) in the CSU GE pattern. Without the lab component this course would count as Social Sciences (D1). Gary Sokolow [M], Marla Gleave [2nd]. With the following revisions: 1. 5. Discussion Items 5.1 Articulation Update – Jay Dragten By the end of this meeting we now have 10 transfer degree and have met our quota. There are three more transfer degrees slated to come before the Curriculum Committee before the end of this school year. The state has not set a quota for how many transfer degrees a school should offer but the trend among community colleges is to get as many done as possible with the belief the state will set a number. With the passage of SB440, transfer degrees for larger areas instead of single disciplines will be developed. Currently there are no transfer model curriculum templates yet. These transfer degrees will look similar to CR’s Liberal Art degrees. As SB440 degrees are approved, the plan is to sunset the corresponding liberal art degree. This will eliminate redundancy. 5.2 Proposed revisions to the CCC‐511 Non‐substantial Change form Information was added to give context to the supplemental questions that need to be entered in Curriculum Inventory. This document will be an action item at the March 14th meeting. 5.3 Proposed revisions to the Distance Education Course Proposal Form – Mark Winter The changes to this proposal form will bring it into compliance with the ACCJC DE standards. Specifically for defining regular effective contact. The CR policy regarding regular effective contact has been folded into the proposal form. Mark Winter hopes that a lot of the information on the form can be removed as faculty are required to be certified before they can teach on‐line. Each modality needs its own separate approval. For example if a course is approved to be hybrid, it cannot be switched to interactive TV for a semester. Jeff Cummings asked if there is a spot on the form that asks if approving the course meets or exceeds the 50‐
percent threshold. And if the program does meet or exceed the threshold, is there a place on the form asking if the program has been approved to be taught 50‐percent online. Jeff Cummings indicated that substantive changes have to be submitted to the ACCJC before it can be taught 50‐percent online. This would be a filter to make sure CR is out of compliance with ACCJC standards. It has been the policy of the ACCJC for at least 10 years that substantive change forms be submitted before reaching the 50‐percent threshold. Mark Winter is going to work with George Potamianos on a form suggesting how a certificate or degree will be approved for the 50‐percent or more online. The ACCJC will want to know that CR has an internal process to vet the change. This form will be a discussion item at the March 14th meeting. Page 9 of 10 Gary Sokolow asked if the district was ready to provide support and resources to Distance Education. As a part of the substantive change to ACCJC, it will be proposed that there will be 2.0 FTE staff and management. Sean Herrera‐Thomas said there was a rush to innovate using online modalities because of pressure from for‐profit colleges. He is concern is that CR develops a virtual CR that is equivalent to the brick and mortar CR. 6. Announcements and Open Forum There were no announcements at this time. 7. Adjournment: On motion by Marla Gleave, seconded by Gary Sokolow, the meeting was adjourned at 4:15p.m. Next Meeting: March 14, 2014 Page 10 of 10
