Associate in Arts in Anthropology for Transfer
CCC‐501 Narrative Requirements
Criteria A. Appropriateness to Mission
1. Statement of Program Goals and Objectives
According to the American Anthropological Association, anthropology is “the study of humans, past
and present. To understand the full sweep and complexity of cultures across all of human history,
anthropology draws and builds upon knowledge from the social and biological sciences as well as
the humanities and physical sciences. A central concern of anthropologists is the application of
knowledge to the solution of human problems. Historically, anthropologists in the United States
have been trained in one of four areas: sociocultural anthropology, biological/physical anthropology,
archaeology, and linguistics.” To that end, the following degree program provides coursework in the
four subdisciplines, as well as courses within a variety of social, biological, and physical sciences, as
well as the humanities. This degree prepares students to pursue seamlessly a baccalaureate degree
in Anthropology at a CSU.
2. Catalog Description
A student may earn an Associate in Arts in Anthropology for Transfer pending CCCCO approval. The
Associate in Arts in Anthropology for Transfer is intended for students who plan to complete a
bachelor’s degree in Anthropology at a CSU campus. Students completing the Associate in Arts in
Anthropology for Transfer degree are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a
particular campus or major. This preparation includes the following student learning outcomes:
1. describe the breadth of anthropology and be able to characterize anthropology’s distinctive
theoretical and methodological approaches with respect to other disciplines;
2. explain the basic processes of human biological evolution, including how it applies to
hominin evolution and modern human variation;
3. identify the ethical responsibilities and concerns in the conducting of anthropological
research;
4. demonstrate the ability to think holistically and comparatively in describing human cultural
diversity and cultural change through time; and
5. identify and utilize appropriate methods for the undertaking of anthropological fieldwork.
Students transferring to a CSU campus that does accept the Associate in Arts in Anthropology for
Transfer will be required to complete no more than 60 units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s
degree. To meet the requirements for this degree the students must:
1. Complete 60 semester units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University,
including both of the following:
a. Complete the California State University General Education‐Breadth pattern (CSU GE
Breadth); OR the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC)
pattern.
b. A minimum of 18 semester units in the Associate in Arts in Anthropology degree
2. Obtain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0.
To complete the Associate in Arts in Anthropology, students must earn a C or better in required
courses for the major. A P (Pass) grade is not acceptable for courses in this degree.
Students completing this degree are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a
particular campus or major. Students transferring to a CSU campus that does accept the Associate in
Arts in Anthropology for Transfer will be required to complete no more than 60 units after transfer
to earn a bachelor’s degree. This degree may not be the best option for students intending to
transfer to a particular CSU campus or to a university or college that is not part of the CSU system. In
all cases, students should consult with a counselor for more information on university admission and
transfer requirements.
