Position Description and Responsibilities
1. Overview
The FC Representative is a member of the Education Graduate Student Association and
reports to the Executive Team. This member is responsible for representing and
advocating for the EGSA and all education graduate students on the Faculty Council (FC).
The FC is a Faculty-level committee charged with conducting the business of the Faculty
of Education. The Dean of the Faculty of Education chairs FC. In addition to being able to
vote in FC, this member reports back to the EGSA and Executive on the activities of the
Faculty. In cases where two members are in attendance at a FC meeting, only one vote
may be cast on behalf of the EGSA.
2. Responsibilities Overview
This is a breakdown of the approximate amount of time spent on the main categories
below.

Familiarize yourself with the FC primary documents
Familiarize yourself with the roles on the FC and on the individuals serving in
those roles
Familiarize yourself with all Programs within the Faculty, Burnaby- and Surreybased
Reach out and connect with the appropriate administrative assistant (check with
the Dean’s Office). They will be FC to ensure that you get access to old meeting

minutes and get added to the FC listserv. Important documents are circulated via
email frequently.
Book the meetings in your calendar ASAP. As of September 2014 the meetings
are usually on Mondays from 9:30a-12:30p on Burnaby campus.

o Consider the history of the FC and the roles/interactions between faculty
members

4. Description of FC from Faculty of Education Committees Document
The Faculty Council is the principal governing body of the Faculty of Education. The
Executive Committee sets the agenda and the Dean or Dean’s designate chairs the
meeting. Voting members of the Faculty Council with the right to participate in decisions
made by consensus or vote include:

continuing tenure-track (Instructors, Assistant Professors, Associate Professors,
Professors) and continuing teaching faculty (Lecturers, Senior Lecturers,
Laboratory Instructors);
limited term faculty with appointments greater than one year and of at least
50%;
one Coordinator representative and one Faculty Associate representative from
both Field Programs and Professional Programs (as selected by the Coordinators
and Faculty Associates from those program areas)
one undergraduate student (normally the Chair of the Education Student
Association or designate); and
one graduate student (normally the Chair of the Education Graduate Student
Association or designate).
