Additional Bibliometrics
Top 30 most-cited UK-Based authors in International Relations, since 2009.
The data are sorted by the number of citable items an author published in this period multiplied by the number of
‘In Window Cites’ these papers received (see final column: Papers*IWC). This figure is used in preference to an
average because multiplying the values results in a fairer categorisation which shows the authors that are both
well-cited and prolific. Using an average tends to result in a list dominated by co-authors on a single very well
cited paper.

Citable item - a paper which ISI deem to be an Article, a Review or a Proceedings Paper.

In Window Cites (IWC) - the number of cites which a paper received in the two years post publication - that
is those cites which were within the window for inclusion in a two year Impact Factor.

Overall rank – the ranking this author achieved within all IR authors

Additional Citation Analysis
As stated in the full PSA Bibliometrics report: ‘Due to indexing problems ISI faced in 2013 after they changed
their systems, which for some reason seems to particularly affect journals which sometimes use an ampersand in
the title, there are a particularly large number of ‘unlinked’ citations for BJPIR this year - this means that whilst a
citation to the volume has been counted, the data collected by ISI does not show which particular article was
cited. Unfortunately this discrepancy limits how far we are able to analyse the data for BJPIR.’
In order to try and rectify this we have manually looked up each of the citable items (articles or reviews) to which
ISI could not link any cites on the ‘Cited by’ tab on Wiley Online Library. This tab lists cites within CrossRef.
Please note journals listed in CrossRef may not be listed by ISI and vice versa so this is not a perfect solution.
However, the ‘CrossRef cites in 2013’ column in each of the below tables does go some way to expanding the
picture.
