General Education Committee Minutes
February 25, 2014
1. Call to Order: Dennis Frisby called the meeting to order 3:30pm.
Present: Edris Montalvo, Sarah Janda, Yingquin Liu, Dennis Frisby, Mandy
Husak, Jenel Cavazos, Ric Jerez, Syed Ahmed, Kirsten Underwood, Ann Nalley,
Marge Kingsley, Edna McMillan and Karla Oty.
2. Approved minutes from January 2013.
a. Dennis Frisby called for the approval of the minutes for January, 2013.
Motion passed with corrections.
b. Minutes from September 2013 are still needed
3. Department of History and Government – request to block enrollment of students
with English deficiency in select course.
a. Discussion ensued. Motion made by Dr. Nalley “not to approve the
requested block of enrollment of students with English deficiency in select
courses.” Ric Jerez seconded the motion. Motion carried 5 to 2 (1
abstained).
4. Assessment Calendar
a. Is February too late to have roundtable discussion with the departments?
Discussed whether committee should take more of a consultative role and
have the departments take the initiative to call the committee members if
they need assistance.
5. Assessment Data – sampling confidence levels and margin of error
a. Dr. Oty discussed confidence intervals. Asked committee for ideas on
levels of confidence intervals and margins of error. Should the committee
set them for General Education outcomes? Dr. Oty will develop
suggestions/guidelines and bring it back to the committee for
consideration.
6. Look at General Education web page on IRRA site:
a. Go to IRAA website take a look at it and we will discuss it at our next
meeting.
7. Gen Ed roundtables
a. Tabled
