(Chair) James Heflin – Communications
John Geiger – Psychology
Ramona Hall – Education
Mohammad Tabatabai – Mathematical Sciences
Jason Smith – Library
Nicole Bucher – Student Body Representative
Karla Oty (IRAA)
David Fennema – Theatre Arts
Agenda Items/Discussions:
1.
The meeting was called to order at 8:06 AM.
2.
Oty made a motion to approve the October 5th and October 26th minutes. Tabatabai seconded. The minutes
were approved.
3.
First order of business: Oty provided Action Plans from the 2009-2010 General Education PQIR
Presentation. This handout highlighted learning outcomes 1.d., 2.d., and 2.e., along with the action plans
from various departments. Oty used COMM 1113 as an example of a department that had 2.e. previously
listed, and then removed the outcome from its course. Oty said this should not happen every semester.
Geiger pointed out that it is a good thing if a department assesses a course, then may find that they really do
not assess a particular outcome. Oty wanted to give this handout to department chairs. The committee
discussed about the format of the action plans and the PQIR, such as PowerPoint or something different. It
was suggested that the committee should have each department turn in the information in the proper format
that the committee chooses. Oty suggested that there should probably be two presentations, one for the
action plans from the previous year, and another presentation for the new outcomes.
4.
Next item: Heflin said that the Higher Learning Commission will be meeting with the General Education
Committee for the HLC visit. A definite time had not been set.
5.
New Business: Geiger asked about removing HUM 2513. Oty said that the History Department wants to
keep this course and that they updated their general education learning outcomes. Oty also passed out an
updated matrix handout. It is missing the Honors courses. CHEM I and PHYS I does not have their master
course outlines. Oty also said that after the committee approved to remove CHEM II from the general
education courses last spring, no other action was taken to actually remove the course. Geiger brought up
the point that CHEM II could be used as a general education elective.
6.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 7th at 8:00 AM in the MCC.
7.
Meeting adjourned at 8:31 AM.
