CU alumni, professor win honors at SPJ event
Two Cameron University alumni and a CU professor were among those recognized at the annual awards
ceremony of the Oklahoma Pro chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).
Kelly Wray, a 1992 graduate, was awarded second place in newspaper headline writing. Wray currently
works for the Newcastle Pacer. He has worked for the Lawton Constitution and the Duncan Banner, and
was also the advisor to the student newspaper at Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
Brad Cooksey, a 1997 Cameron graduate and Steve Adams, assistant professor in communication, were
awarded first place in the radio sports play-by-play category. Cooksey and Adams were recognized for
announcing Lawton Eisenhower football games on KMGZ-FM.
Cooksey and Adams have announced football games together for the past six years. Cooksey is a math
teacher, assistant basketball coach and head golf coach at Eisenhower High School. Adams has been
teaching broadcast courses at Cameron for 19 years.
The SPJ Annual Awards Ceremony featured more than 900 entries in areas of newspaper, radio,
television, magazines, Web site design, graphic design and public relations.
