For Immediate Release – Lawton, OK, July 21, 2005 Cameron University garners seven awards at annual college public relations contest Cameron University earned seven awards during the annual Oklahoma College Public Relations Association (OCPRA) awards contest, including two Grand awards (1st place). The awards were given during OCPRA’s annual summer conference, held this month at Quartz Mountain Lodge, near Lone Wolf. OCPRA is made up of public relations professionals from the state’s public and private colleges and universities. The organization endeavors to increase the professional skills of its members, as well as promote higher education. This year’s contest featured competition in 27 different categories. Cameron received honors for work completed by the university’s Sports Information and Government and Community Relations offices. Cameron earned a Grand award in the “Sports Publication” category for the Cameron Aggie Basketball 2004-2005 Media Guide, produced by Sports Information Director Steve Doughty. Doughty also received an Excellence award (2nd place) in the “Sports Writing” category for his story entitled “Coach Carter’s Kid.” J. Adam Calaway, assistant director of Government and Community Relations, received the university’s other Grand award in the “Short Feature” category for his feature on the return of Cameron’s mascot Ole Kim. Both Calaway and Doughty’s stories were included in the Spring 2005 edition of the Cameron Magazine. (over) ocpra, ADD ONE Cameron earned two Achievement awards (3rd place) in the “Shoe String” and “News Writing” categories. The “Short String” category honors unique projects developed for a nominal cost. Cameron earned its award in this category for a reminder postcard for a meeting that could be slipped into a daily planner. The second Achievement award went to Calaway for his news release on the election of Cameron professor Dr. E. Ann Nalley to the presidential succession of the American Chemical Society, the largest scientific society in the world. Megan Spray, Cameron University’s graphic designer, earned a pair of honorable mentions. Spray was honored in the “Bright Idea” category for the design of the picture backdrop used at this year’s graduation ceremony. She was also honored in the “Magazine Cover” category for her design of the 2005 edition of the Cameron Magazine. The magazine was developed by the Government and Community Relations, Development and Alumni Relations offices. Cameron tied for the most awards earned by a regional institution.
