Cameron University’s agriculture department will host its second annual range and brush management workshop on Thursday, May 13.
The seminar and field day will cover various ways to manage mesquite rangelands, including the use prescription burning, grazing management, power fencing and goats, according to Dr. Jerry Dodd, chair of
Cameron’s agriculture program.
The event begins at 11 a.m. at the CU Agriculture Complex, 905 SW 38th Street in Lawton. Participants will travel to field sites on ranching operations located between Indiahoma and Cooperton. The tour will conclude around 6:45 p.m.
The seminar will begin with an overview of the benefits of prescription burning in managing rangeland for wildlife and livestock production. During a stop at Dodd Ranch north of Indiahoma, participants will examine the effects of burning, clipping and grazing management practices that are designed to improve range condition.
At the nearby Phelan Ranch, the impact of using burns in different years and the use of grazing management to maintain high range condition will be examined. The use of power fencing will also be demonstrated.
