For Immediate Release – Lawton, OK, April 27, 2004 Cameron University Students in Free Enterprise win runner-up recognition in regional competition Students on Cameron University’s SIFE team matched their educational outreach projects against other colleges and universities at the 2004 Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Regional Competition and Career Opportunity Fair, earning first runner-up honors from a panel of judges. More than 30 Cameron students, all active members of the SIFE team, attended the competition April 8 in Dallas. Teams were judged on how well their projects taught others the principles of free enterprise. Students in Free Enterprise encourages students to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-life situations, using their knowledge to better their communities through educational outreach projects. Nathan McCulloch, a senior management major from Australia; Tucker Wilson, a senior accounting major from Loco; Fred Fox III, a junior business administration major from Lawton; Gail McAlmont, a junior marketing major from the Commonwealth of Dominica; Matthew Modeste, a junior accounting major from Saint Lucia; and Crystal Parrish, a sophomore chemistry major from Walters, gave the formal presentation to a panel of corporate executives from across the country. Two CU management information system majors – Glenn Davis, a sophomore from Saint Kitts, and Cindy Eusebe, a senior from the Commonwealth of Dominica – provided technical assistance during the presentation. All members of the team joined the speaking group following the presentation to respond to questions posed by judges about projects performed during the 2003-2004 academic year. The SIFE team sponsored a variety of activities during the academic year, including Cameron University Leaders and Entrepreneurs camps – called “CULE Camps,” for short – and “Make it a Reality” workshops. Members also developed personal financial success skills presentations and other projects designed to teach the principles of global market economics and business success. During the regional competition, SIFE advisors Dr. Sylvia Burgess and Dr. Suzanne Clinton were named Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellows in recognition of their leadership and support of Cameron’s program. “SIFE has been an enormous success this year,” said Burgess. “Team members have given thousands of hours to help improve economic conditions in Southwest Oklahoma – and they had a barrel of fun in the process.” “The students are already planning projects for the summer and they are determined to bring home the championship next spring,” Clinton added.
