Being Genealogical:
Contemporary Philosophical
Reflection on Kinship
A new patchwork of notions of kinship is emerging in Euro-American cultures that
confounds many of us. How should we understand ourselves as genealogical beings
today? The lecture draws on contemporary thought on the concepts of descent and
alliance—from feminist philosophy, evolutionary thought, anthropology and
European philosophy—to contribute to a philosophy of human generative relations
that sheds vestigial, unjust, and misguided presuppositions still at work in current
conceptions of kin relation.
