Review 1 – relaxing on the mountain
Whiteside Mountain
By Daniel Myers
If you want to experience some of the amazing landscape in Western
Carolina, Whiteside Mountain is just a 45-minute drive away, located in
the town of Highlands. Just turn left onto 107 and follow that until you
reach 64. Turn right onto 64 until you come up to Whiteside Mountain
Road on the left; it’s easy to miss. The drive is very scenic and relaxing
and the time passes fairly quickly.
In the parking lot, there is a bathroom and a few picnic tables to enjoy
lunch at. There are also informational boards that told the history of the area and showed a map outline of the
trail that we were going to hike. The hike is approximately 1.5 miles long with an 800 ft. incline, and is expected
to take somewhere around 2 hours. The trail is moderately difficult and will definitely make you work up a
sweat.
The trail starts in the woods where most of the upwards climbing is. There are occasional staircases to help you
over a few of the more difficult areas. After about ten minutes, we came up to a clearing on the side of the
mountain. The view was amazing; you could see for miles. As we went along the trail we came out to more
clearings and amazing photo opportunities. We later found out that we were not supposed to go on these rock
faces because they were extremely dangerous. There were the safer areas that had guardrails. There were more
informational boards along the path that told you how the mountain was created, the types of birds in the area,
and even a daring rescue effort for a lost hiker.
One of the coolest spots to take a picture from is the highest point on the mountain at an altitude of 4930 feet,
which is chiseled into the rock. On the way back down the mountain, the trail took us back into the woods.
There were a few safety issues that should be noted. Climbing on the rock face is dangerous and prohibited, and
more signs should be posted. We had a run-in with a copperhead, so there is the danger of snakes along the
trail. Overall, it was a very enjoyable day and I would recommend it to anybody. You should come prepared with
plenty of water and snacks since you will be outside for an extended period of time, but it will be a relaxing
event.
Review 2 -- a local eatery in Sylva
Kobe Express
By: Katelyn Callahan
Ever since I was two years old, my father had me living off of
California rolls and seaweed salad. Still to this day, I am all about
trying new sushi, but I am very particular about new Japanese
restaurants. Moving to Cullowhee North Carolina has limited my
choices of great sushi to an extremely small quantity. When I heard about Kobe Express, I was extremely
optimistic about a Japanese restaurant that was located near a Wal Mart and a Bo jangles. Luckily I am open to
trying new things, and I am tremendously thankful I decided to give it a try.
The Kobe Japanese restaurant and sushi’s location turned out to be helpful. Being new to this community,
finding restaurants in difficult locations does not fit my crowding college schedule. The building is very easy to
find, and different stores and facilities surround the restaurant made the trip worthwhile. The internal design of
a restaurant is usually the first item that catches my eye. The interior design of the restaurant made the
atmosphere more of a traditional and pleasing Japanese setting. Traditional Japanese’s dragons and Japanese
kimono dolls covered the shelves and walls. The black and white symbols and paintings also gave the feeling of a
traditional Japanese restaurant and get a different feel of a new culture. My usual trips to a Japanese restaurant
at home were usually the typical choice for a date night due to high costs for the entrees. Not only was the
quality of the food excellent, but also the prices are affordable and worth paying for the entrée. Being in college
has made money more crucial to keep than ever before, so it was satisfying that the prices were in a great
range. The menu also had great options for rolls that I enjoyed. I decided to order the Philadelphia roll and the
Crunch roll. Both of these entrees were extremely satisfying and had exquisite taste. When ordering sushi, I also
believe the look and design of the roll is significant to a customer. The plates and roll design looked terrific and I
could not wait to dive right in and eat. I was also impressed that the menu had many other options for Japanese
food besides sushi. Because my friend prefers other Japanese meals, it made the trip easier to go to Kobe
express and have satisfaction with both of our meals.
The service at Kobe Express was okay, but could show improvement. The restaurant was on average busy during
the day I went, so service was slow and timely. Because I prefer immediate care after being seated at a table, I
am hoping this issue was due to the busy hours that I arrived the ladies that were serving were extremely nice
and cooperative. They seemed very knowledgeable about the entrees, which made ordering easier. Overall,
Kobe express was a well satisfying restaurant. I look forward to many trips back for some quality sushi, and
recommend a good meal to all of my friends. With the many food varieties and pleasant atmosphere, Kobe
Express shows great business now and in the future. Kobe Express Facebook
