Delta Dialogue Network Part-Time Community Coordinator Opportunity: Fort Chipewyan
The Delta Dialogue Network (DDN) is a research partnership that brings together researchers from the
University of Saskatchewan and key partners from three inland deltas: the Saskatchewan River Delta, Slave
River Delta, and Peace-Athabasca Delta. Its goal is to understand and build upon the best practices of how
knowledge is shared within and across deltas so that it is accessible, meaningful and useful to communities,
decision-makers and academics.
For DDN research in the Peace-Athabasca Delta, the University of Saskatchewan has partnered with the PeaceAthabasca Ecological Monitoring Program (PADEMP), which is a collaboration between Aboriginal groups,
government agencies and non-government organizations. The mandate of PADEMP is to measure, evaluate
and communicate the state of the Peace-Athabasca Delta using both Traditional Knowledge and Western
Science.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The DDN research in the Peace-Athabasca Delta is a collaborative project focused on
how research and monitoring information about the Peace-Athabasca Delta can be best communicated to
influence policy and decision making that could affect the delta’s water quantity.
The DDN research team for the Peace-Athabasca Delta, which includes University of Saskatchewan and
PADEMP, is seeking one part time community coordinator, to be based in Fort Chipewyan. This is a 1-year
position expected to start in September, 2015. This community coordinator will support the work of the DDN
research team in Fort Chipewyan.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the DDN Student Researcher for the Peace-Athabasca
Delta, you will work with DDN research team members to:








schedule project activities and meetings as well as coordinate and undertake research activities in Fort
Chipewyan;
reading research materials and other information to become familiar with the proposed research;
support graduate students working in the communities, including advising graduate students, where
appropriate, on community protocols and project development;
conduct surveys with community members as appropriate and promote projects within the local
communities;
support Elders, harvesters and community members taking part in DDN activities;
participate in DDN meetings and workshops;
communicate with other community or regional coordinators and staff as necessary (e.g., DDN
coordinators in Fort Smith, Fort Resolution, etc.); and
work with the student researcher and participate in other opportunities or duties identified together
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: desire and willingness to communicate with Elders, harvesters, environment and
government staff, researchers and students • some experience working with Elders and/or researchers is an
asset, but not required • knowledge of Chipewyan and/or Cree (spoken or written) is an asset, but not required
• good reporting, communication and outreach skills • access to a computer, telephone and internet •
candidates living outside of Fort Chipewyan will be considered, but will be responsible for their own travel
costs if they awarded the position.
PAY SCALE AND TIME COMMITMENT: This is a part-time position, with variable hours. While some weeks will
require more hours than other weeks, a time commitment of a minimum of 8 hours per week is expected.
Hours per week will be set through discussions with the selected candidate and the DDN student researcher.
Pay rate is set at $25/hour and telephone and internet costs incurred as part of the project will be reimbursed.
