Delta Dialogue Network Trip Report:
Fort Chipewyan, AB
February 10-12, 2015
Toddi Steelman, Principal
Investigator - University of
Saskatchewan
Purpose of the trip
• Toddi attended the Peace-Athabasca Delta Ecological
Monitoring Program (PADEMP) Forum and Steering
Committee Meeting, held in Fort Chipewyan, in order to
present on the Delta Dialogue Network
• “The purpose of the PADEMP
Forum is to generate information
sharing, engagement and
collaboration between those
conducting monitoring in the
Delta, local Traditional
Knowledge holders, youth and
other community members.” –
PADEMP
PADEMP Forum
• There were a number of different
presentations at the Forum, on
topics such as muskrat surveys,
water contaminants, youth
engagement, etc.
• Presenters came from different
backgrounds, including various
government departments and
Universities
• A number of people attending the
Forum raised concerns over the
lack of community involvement in
research and monitoring projects
Evening Open House
• In the evening of the first
day of the Forum, there was
a community supper and
open house
• Toddi Steelman presented
on the Delta Dialogue
Network – what we’ve done
so far and what we are
hoping to do next
PADEMP Steering Committee Meeting
• Toddi had the chance to get feedback from
the PADEMP Steering Committee on the
work we are planning on doing in the
Peace-Athabasca Delta, such as looking for
a community coordinator in Fort
Chipewyan
• There was a lot of interest in work we have
done and are hoping to do with youth
Stuart Macmillan, PADEMP Chairperson
and amateur juggler!
– We recently applied for more funding for a
project that will work with youth and leaders
involved in the culture camps currently being
held in Cumberland House, in the
Saskatchewan River Delta
Committee Meeting continued
• Committee members discussed the
culture camps that are being held in
the Peace-Athabasca Delta – this is
an opportunity to connect youth
from different deltas
• It was suggested that going forward
we should bring people together to
learn about the different culture
camps - what is being done, what
students want to see more of, etc.
• If the Delta Dialogue Network is
going to hold a collaborative
workshop in 2016, this would be a
good opportunity to bring youth
together
