DISCUSSION ITEMS Discussion Item: What is Academic Program Activity Key Consideration: Individual committee members share their definitions of “academic program.” The group agrees that there is no disagreement on what constitutes an “academic program.” K. Le – Has there anything that DHLI done programmatically that is not “academic”? Committee thinks DHLI’s programming is academic. D. Beaulieu—“academic” is about organization, not about what the program is doing. o Other committee members disagree. Actions Taken (if any): None Discussion Item: DHLI Charter Key Consideration: Committee discusses DHLI Steering Committee (SC) membership. The issue was raised that there needs to be more Senate representation on the committee. Questions arise about how many representatives each constituent should have and who gets to vote. Should the Staff Guild have two representatives instead of one? Should other District unions be part of the committee? Should there be additional members added to the Steering Committee, such as an additional administrator or more faculty? Should there be voting/non‐voting members? Should an academic program have non‐academic voting representatives? Committee recounts history that former Chancellor LaVista wanted to see financial commitment from District unions. Faculty Guild and Staff Guild offered to make financial commitment. Staff Guild expressed interest in DHLI and wanted to be on the SC. Other District unions did not show interest. K. Le—the Staff Guild expressed interest in educating students about what LACCD workers do and to collaborate on developing educational opportunities such as student scholarships. The Committee discusses external support for DHLI. DHLI exists, in large part, because of support from the Labor Movement. The LA County Federation of Labor supports the program. DHLI needs labor representation. The Senate supports labor and labor education and needs to be more involved not less involved. Discussion continued about representation and balance on the SC and whether the numbers of representatives is important or whether it will make the SC operate like just another district committee. Name: DHLI Steering Committee Website: www.laccd.edu/DHLI Status: final Initials: KL C. Friedlander – The issue isn’t about voting or non‐voting. The problem is we don’t have enough people involved and participating. We need the Faculty Action Committee represented here. They should be the real voice that the SC supports. B. Kimble – expresses concern that SC is spending time at meetings on oral history. The things the SC is grappling with, regardless of who is paying for DHLI, whose on the SC—if we can’t say why DHLI is institutionally valuable, then it has issues. It needs to be able to speak to anyone who looks at it—that DHLI provides something. People get involved when you show them something they want to get involved with. K. Yasuda – DHLI is a labor education program. On the SC, the LATTC Labor Center represents the labor studies discipline, not AFT/union. J. Waddell – summarizes that committee agreed on the roles of the faculty, senate, and district administrator representatives.
