PROPOSAL FOR CHANGE IN PROGRAM UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE University of North Carolina at Wilmington Wilmington, NC 28403 Type of program change proposed (check all that apply) XXX Establishment, dissolution, division, or consolidation of academic departments or other degree-granting entities Establishment, dissolution, or revision of academic degrees, including majors, minors, and certificate programs Policies for maximum and minimum hours required for majors, minors, and certificates Total number of hours required for graduation University-wide competency requirements (other than basic studies, oral communication intensive, or computer competency) Course prefixes Curricular conflicts between schools and/or colleges Other general curricular policies which have total university impact Description of proposed program change: 1. The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice has voted to change our name to the Department of Sociology and Criminology. This more fully represents the nature of the program as a social science degree program, and more accurately reflects the qualifications and specializations of the faculty. 2. The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice has also voted to change the name of our undergraduate major from “Criminal Justice” to “Criminology and Criminal Justice”. We have established two specialization options in our undergraduate curriculum from which students can select: criminology option and the criminal justice option. While there are minor differences in each option, they both emphasize social science training in theory, research methods, and policy analysis. Students will benefit by having their degree read “criminology and criminal justice” because it will convey a broader intellectual training. List of attached documents for review: NONE.
