Explanatory note on the list of entities for statistical purposes – ESA 20101 The lists of entities cover the following institutional sectors: “financial corporations” (code S.12); and “general government” (code S.13). Banco de Portugal is responsible for updating the list of resident monetary financial institutions, thus contributing to maintaining a comprehensive list of such entities operating in each European Union Member State (Monetary Financial Institutions (MFIs) data). This list, which is also used to identify institutions subject to minimum reserve requirements, is available on the European Central Bank’s website, and is updated on a monthly basis. Whenever an institution has doubts on the sectoral classification of a corporation, it should contact the Monetary and Financial Statistics Division and the Central Credit Register of Banco de Portugal’s Statistics Department (through fax no 21 312 8480 or email ddemc@bportugal.pt). It should supply all available information and deemed important for classification. With regard to the breakdown of the nonresident sector, an exercise was carried out at Community level to define a series of guidelines identifying the institutional sectors of the various Member States (see “Money and Banking Statistics Sector Manual”). At the same time, the above-mentioned list of MFIs available on the ECB’s website allows all this sector’s entities operating in EU Member States to be identified. The lists of entities for statistical purposes are structured into eight different components: monetary financial institutionsinvestment funds (except money market funds); other financial intermediaries; financial auxiliaries; captive financial institutions and money lenders; insurance companies and pension funds; general government; and entities from the public sector, excluding the general government. Each component has its own file available in EXCEL and PDF format. Each list component may be updated with different frequencies. The list regarding the MFI sector will be updated on a monthly basis in liaison with the procedure involving the list on EU Member States. The month in which every component was updated is referred to next to the respective identification. Each file of lists of entities includes the following fields: • Entity identifying code – refers to the code assigned by the Portuguese Securities Market Commission in the case of investment funds, the code assigned by the Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority in the case of pension funds and the legal person number for the remaining entities. • BP code – refers to the code of registration at Banco de Portugal assigned to entities subject to the Bank’s supervision.
