Explanatory note on the list of entities for statistical
purposes – ESA 951
The lists of entities cover the following institutional sectors: “financial sector” (code
1100000); and “general government” (code
1200000). The breakdown and codification of
each of these sectors is in line with “Table S institutional sectors” included in the annex to
Instruction of Banco de Portugal No 19/2002,
which is based on the framework provided by
the European System of National and Regional
Accounts in the Community (ESA 95). Where
deemed pertinent, a more detailed sectoral
breakdown than mentioned in the above
table was presented.
Banco de Portugal is responsible for updating
the list of resident monetary financial institutions, thus contributing to maintaining a
comprehensive list of such entities operating
in each European Union Member State
(Monetary Financial Institutions (MFIs) data).
This list, which is also used to identify institutions subject to minimum reserve requirements, is available on the European Central
Bank’s website, and is updated on a monthly
basis.
Whenever an institution subject to the reporting requirements set forth in Instruction of
Banco de Portugal No 19/2002 has as counterparty to a given transaction an entity from
the above-mentioned sectors but is not
included in the lists in force and/or about
which there are doubts as to its sectoral
classification, it should contact the Monetary
and Financial Statistics Division and the
Central Credit Register of Banco de Portugal’s
Statistics Department (through fax no 21 312
8480 or email ddemc@bportugal.pt). It should
supply all available information and deemed
important for classification.
With regard to the breakdown of the nonresident sector, an exercise was carried out at
Community level to define a series of guidelines identifying the institutional sectors of the
various Member States (see “Money and
Banking Statistics Sector Manual”). At the
same time, the above-mentioned list of MFIs
available on the ECB’s website allows all this
sector’s entities operating in EU Member
States to be identified.
The lists of entities for statistical purposes are
structured into five different components:
monetary financial institutions; other financial
intermediaries; financial auxiliaries; insurance
companies and pension funds; and general
government. Each component has its own file
available in EXCEL and PDF format. Each list
component may be updated with different
frequencies. The list regarding the MFI sector
will be updated on a monthly basis in liaison
with the procedure involving the list on EU
Member States. The month in which every
component was updated is referred to next to
the respective identification.
Each file of lists of entities includes the
following fields:
•
Entity identifying code – refers to
the code assigned by the Portuguese Securities Market Commission in the case of investment
funds, the code assigned by the Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority in the case of pen-
1 de 2
sion funds and the legal person
number for the remaining entities.
•
BP code – refers to the code of registration at Banco de Portugal assigned to entities subject to the
Bank’s supervision. For institutions
that are not under the Bank’s supervision, this field is blank. The
field is only available in files updated from September 2002 onwards.
•
Name
•
Commencement of activity – refers to the date of setting-up or
commencement of activities in the
sector in question. In the case of
new entities this date corresponds
to their set-up date, and may not
coincide with the actual date of
commencement of activities; in the
case of already existing entities,
but which have undergone a
change in institutional sector, the
date indicated in this field corresponds to the date of institutional
sector change, which should correspond to the actual date of commencement of activity in the new
sector.
•
When the statistical sectoral classification
of an entity is changed and it is incorporated into a different sector, the entity is
listed in both sectors, with an associated
date of termination of activity in the initial
sector and a starting date in the new
sector.
These lists are as comprehensive as possible and based on information available at
Banco de Portugal as soon as it is received.
With regard to the monetary financial
institutions component, its potential for
being out-of-date is small, given that any
changes are incorporated on a monthly
basis.

Community - Council Regulation (EC) No 2223/96 of 25
June 1996.
Termination of activity – refers to
the date of termination of activity
in the sector in question, which
corresponds to the date in which
the entity actually ended its activities or the date of change of the institutional sector where it was classified for statistical purposes.
In addition to entities in operation, those
that terminated their activities in the past
two years are also presented.
