Discussion Item: CMS Research Hard copy of 2002-03 Marine Science Pilot Projects application information and procedures for submission of a proposal was distributed to IAC for comments. . A correction was noted to the information about creation of a summer intern program. Intern program is intended for undergraduate students (vs. graduate students). Finalist is Lisa Varner Handout with background info on Lisa Varner was distributed Lisa is scheduled to meet with selected faculty, the IAC and the CMS Directors in 3 separate groups on Wednesday (Nov. 28) Agenda Item: The Kenan Professor of Marine Science A handout was distributed with background information on the Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Professorship in Marine Sciences Ron: Chaired search in 96-97; made offer/turned down/left open Dan: Provided background information: o Colleague at Rosenstiel applied, was told no longer available o July 98 interviewed for CMS Director, was offered Kenan Chair as Director; in consultation w/Provost, decided to hold open to attract high level candidate; searched/made offer/turned down. o Consultation w/John Cavanaugh, decided to provide Kenan Chair to Biology Dept. to help w/Biology Dept. PhD effort. o Summarized John Cavanaugh criteria (6 points from first page of handout). Scott: Concerned about who will pay for search (currently eating costs for another search) Martin: Concern re: assigning this position lead role in CORMP. o Flexibility in attracting quality scientist o CORMP funding uncertain o Should not have too much emphasis Scott: Needs to be best candidate we can get and meet needs of Biology Department and CMS; should not limit candidates by CORMP requirement. Dan: Could include CORMP as recruiting tool but not include in ad. Dick: Should include Marine Chemist (Steve Skrabal…Dick will ask) Tricia: Want to ask Lynn Leonard Motion: Scott moved that search committee be made up of Department Chairs or their designees (1 from each Department: Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Physics, and Biology) and CMS Director and Biology Department Advisory Committee. o The IAC members present approved this motion. Areas of search should include the 4 areas in the PhD proposal: Coastal and Estuarine biology Crustacean Biology Marine mammalogy Molecular genetics and systematics of marine organisms CMS Internal Advisory Committee Meeting Summary – 11/20/2001 - Page 4 Agenda Item: Update on Marine Biology PhD Program Scott provided a brief overview of the history and status of the process. A lively discussion ensued. Discussion Item: Other Business - Sisson Trust Scott: At CMS Faculty Mtg. last month, there was a question about the Sisson Trust account. A handout with background information was distributed to IAC Members. Discussion Item: Other Business – CMS Boat User Fees Martin: Steve Mastro has talked about user fees. Need opportunity to discuss Jim: Boat replacement fund was lost this year. Unsure about future years. If gone for good, need user fees. Martin: Need input before fees are established. Some numbers are being discussed. How are boats bought by grants going to be charged? Faculty members want to be involved up front. Jim: No final decisions have been made. Dan: Related issue – Whether or not there are user fees, charges will be made for damage repairs (excepting normal wear and tear). Next Meeting: There will be no meeting in December. The schedule for the New Year will be announced in January. CMS Faculty Meeting will be held next Friday (November 30, 2001). CMS Internal Advisory Committee Meeting Summary – 11/20/2001 - Page 5 Draft for Comments from CMS IAC (Provided to IAC by Dr. Scott Quackenbush) Advanced Marine Sciences: Summer I or II An intensive 7-week survey of current marine sciences (4 credits) to include topics in marine biology, marine chemistry, physical oceanography and marine geology. Lectures daily, with 2 lab sections per week. Specific topics will vary depending on current faculty participation. A faculty team from biological sciences, chemistry, earth science and physics will conduct lectures and labs relevant to current marine sciences. Course Outline Week 1: Introduction Week 2 and 3: Marine Biology Week 4and 5: Marine Chemistry Week 6 and 7: Marine Geology or Physical Oceanography Course; 4 credits, three-credit lecture, 1 credit lab. Register for: BIO 485; CHM 490; GLY 480 or PHY 490. All cross-listed in the Summer Session. In addition to this lecture format of a survey of marine sciences, students should be able to register for special research opportunities with faculty as Directed Independent Studies (BIO 491, CHM 491; GLY 491: PHY 491).
