Alliance
John Morrison presented to the Committee a draft copy of the “Charter of the NC Alliance in
Marine Science (NC AiMS).” Dr. Morrison explained that Chancellor Miller asked CMS to negotiate
the aligning of Marine Science Programs in North Carolina. This alignment will make for easier
communication and collaboration and make the best use of resources to meet the needs of the
populous of North Carolina.
Chancellor Miller has said that all institutions do not have to participate in this alliance, and we
can move forward with only part of the Marine Science programs. Chancellor Miller has
appointed UNCW Center for Marine Science to be management for the consortia.
Dr. Morrison asked that Committee members review this draft and give suggestions. He asked
that this document not be shared with other faculty at this time. He added that a draft has been
sent to other institution program heads to get an idea of what else they would want to add. Once
those comments are received and this document revised, a copy will be shared with faculty most
likely during the summer.
Strategic Plan
Dr. Morrison reminded the Committee that it is time to re-visit the CMS Strategic Plan. He asked
Committee members to solicit suggestions from faculty and submit suggestions during the
summer. He mentioned that Dr. Baden plans to appoint another CRISP (Center Research
Investigators for Strategic Planning) committee. Dr. Morrison explained the Strategic Plan does
not have to be completely revised, however it needs to be updated and a copy given to the new
Provost.
Core Projects Funding
Nancy Grindlay provided a hand out the committee for the CMS Pilot Projects. The Committee
discussed the proposed Final Reports Guidelines and offered suggestions on measuring Pilot
Project results. The Committee agreed additional follow-up was needed on awarded grants
related to pilot projects and final reports.
