Other Items Members Present Dr. Nancy Grindlay (CMS/Associate Director) Dr. Jack Hall (EVS/Chair) Dr. Richard Laws (GLY/Resident Faculty 2010-2012) Dr. Lynn Leonard (GLY/Chair) Dr. John Morrison (CMS/Associate Director) Dr. Steve Skrabal (CHM/Non-Resident, 2010-2012) Dr. Rob Whitehead (Non-tenure Research Faculty 2011-2013) Dr. Joan Willey (CMS/Associate Director) CMS Internal Advisory Committee Meeting Wednesday, May 16, 2012 10:30a.m. – 12:00Noon Fish Bowl Alliance John Morrison presented to the Committee a draft copy of the “Charter of the NC Alliance in Marine Science (NC AiMS).” Dr. Morrison explained that Chancellor Miller asked CMS to negotiate the aligning of Marine Science Programs in North Carolina. This alignment will make for easier communication and collaboration and make the best use of resources to meet the needs of the populous of North Carolina. Chancellor Miller has said that all institutions do not have to participate in this alliance, and we can move forward with only part of the Marine Science programs. Chancellor Miller has appointed UNCW Center for Marine Science to be management for the consortia. Dr. Morrison asked that Committee members review this draft and give suggestions. He asked that this document not be shared with other faculty at this time. He added that a draft has been sent to other institution program heads to get an idea of what else they would want to add. Once those comments are received and this document revised, a copy will be shared with faculty most likely during the summer. Strategic Plan Dr. Morrison reminded the Committee that it is time to re-visit the CMS Strategic Plan. He asked Committee members to solicit suggestions from faculty and submit suggestions during the summer. He mentioned that Dr. Baden plans to appoint another CRISP (Center Research Investigators for Strategic Planning) committee. Dr. Morrison explained the Strategic Plan does not have to be completely revised, however it needs to be updated and a copy given to the new Provost. Core Projects Funding Nancy Grindlay provided a hand out the committee for the CMS Pilot Projects. The Committee discussed the proposed Final Reports Guidelines and offered suggestions on measuring Pilot Project results. The Committee agreed additional follow-up was needed on awarded grants related to pilot projects and final reports. CMS Internal Advisory Committee Meeting Wednesday, May 16, 2012 10:30a.m. – 12:00Noon Fish Bowl Assistant to the CMS Associate Director for Education Position Dr. Willey announced several excellent candidates had applied for the Assistant to the CMS Associate Director for Education position. Dr. Baden and Dr. Willey plan to interview candidates. Marine Tech position John Morrison informed the committee that 23 applications were received for John Murray’s old position. Jay Styron, John Morrison, Randy Turner and Nancy Grindlay met and reviewed all 23 applications and narrowed to 3 candidates. The 3 recommended candidates were sent to Human Resources for their review and to proceed with the next steps. Marine Science TA’s Dr. Willey stated that Bob Roer has given us five additional permanent TA’s. There are now a total of 17 University supported TA’s in Marine Science. 5.
