We have substantial space for undergraduates to work on research however we must be able to get students back and forth in an efficient manner. Paul has proposed a schedule to be 2 times per hour 5 days per week 8:00a.m. to 6:00p.m. Paul is asking for a commitment for 1 year of operation with without complaints of ridership to give the chance for ridership. This would be a contract bus service, not WAVE. Fungus Remediation Room #2350/2351 (the Dark Room) had a mold issue due to a leaking A/C condensing fan above this room. EH&S sprayed room and killed the fungus. The next step is to tear out the sheet rock and furniture in this room and spray again. Finally, water proof sheet rock will be put up and then room redesign. To complete the remediation will take a year. Dock Proposal We are seeking funding through an NSF upgrade program to expand and update our dock facilities. The proposal was just submitted yesterday afternoon and the Project Summary is included in meeting handouts. NSF decision will be made in 7 months. It was an NSF requirement that the project cost be under $300,000. If funded, project will be completed in 1 year. Aquarium Maintenance Dr. Baden received lots of feedback regarding his email about the Lobby Aquarium. The majority of the responses indicate the aquarium should remain and many suggested gathering a list of volunteers or hiring a maintenance company to service the aquarium. Dr. Baden expressed concern that volunteers would become bored due to the time commitment required. Dr. Baden added he received quotes from three aquarium maintenance companies that range from $200 per month to $6,000 per month. A former UNCW student came in with the lowest bid of $200 per month but it does not include water changes. The highest bid is $6,000 per month and includes 20% weekly water changes and we pay for equipment. CMS Internal Advisory Committee Meeting January 18, 2012 10:30a.m. – 12:00Noon General Construction MARBIONC is 20% complete and is 3% paid out. UNCW is 90 days behind in payment to contractor. UNCW is looking in to the delay and getting it resolved. The room behind the aquarium is being renovated to make a large office. The marble on the exterior building is being removed to install 3 windows for this office. This office will house a not for profit Marine Biotechnology Center of Innovation Executive Director. MARBIONC fund paying for this. We have nearly completed talks with AT&T for cell phone tower here at CMS. This cell phone tower will get us comparable to what main campus has for internet speed. Rob Hoon has contract document and is communicating with AT&T. Strategic Plan Discussion of adding additional areas and establishing Chairs to encourage faculty participation. Other Anne Beach will attend the next IAC meeting to discuss MARBIONC planning and debt. Status of PhD program Coastal and Marine Science Cameron School of Business has inquired about a visit to CMS. This visit would be for interested CSB faculty to introduce them to CMS programs and initiatives. We are working to schedule a visit to include a tour and networking reception with CMS faculty. CSB suggested hosting this on a Thursday or Friday beginning at 4:00 or 4:15. The CMS IAC agreed with this time.
