1.

Grant Application Encouragement Document (Baden)

Dr. Baden presented the idea of the grant application encouragement program for researchers at CMS. The idea is to encourage the writing of grants with a fiscal incentive. This is in response to the drastic drop in F&A grants at UNCW. This has been a 3 year trend. We are expecting to spend on the following schedule

~$50,000 – First year

~$70,000 – Second year

~$80,000 – Third year and top out after that.

It was decided that this incentive would need a ceiling/cap for submission of 2% to 3% up to that decided limit.

All MS faculty would be eligible to apply.

2.

CMS Office and Lab Space (Pawlik)

Joe Pawlik presented the discussion on available space at CMS and how we can get more faculty down at our facility. When the new building opens there will be many new offices open and we want to attract new researchers to our facility. Both old UNCW faculty and potential new incoming faculty. What incentives can CMS provide? Problem is that right now no one in biology wants to move here. The idea was suggested that if CMS was to allow more use of facilities and equipment it might help to facilitate more people working down here.

3.

State-wide Marine Science Review (Baden)

Dr. Baden and Dr. Finelli have been tasked with writing a complete MS review. This has been requested at the state level. This review might cause a reallocation of resources. This review is to be completed by Oct 17 th 2012.

ECU will be our major competitor for resources.

4.

IAC Membership (Baden)

Dr. Baden brought up a discussion on the usefulness of the IAC meetings. It was agreed by the group that these meetings were necessary to keep all departments on the same page. They should continue to be monthly at CMS. If a chair is too busy to attend they have the option of electing a substitute from their faculty. In the long term, members should think if this protocol needs any changes or if they have any issues. This is an open item that the group will come back to.

5.

CMS Administration “One Wish” List (Baden)

Wish List items:

Execution on Master Plan

Center as an academic unit

New research vessel

Finding a continuous source of funds for undergrads working in labs

Permission to establish PhD without compromising the MS degree

6.

Other

Multi-page email distribution: All on the list self declare themselves as MS faculty. Check list to see if anyone needs to be removed/added. Should separate lists be made for active MS researchers or tenured? Need to create a set of requirements for faculty to be on the list. Think for next meeting how to determine MS status. Members are to mark up a hard copy and send to John.

For next meeting:

Look at wishlist items and comment. Each department should also send 1 wishlist item.

Upcoming:

Plan for opening of new building

What space is available?

How much space will free up?

Business plan

How will the new building change opportunities down here.
