Sustainable Campus Committee (SCC) DRAFT Meeting Minutes Monday, December 6, 2010 : Main Hall 004, 11:10am – 1:00pm Members Present: Mike Panisko, Cherie Peacock, Robin Saha, Patrick Rhea, Aleta Jokisch, Jeff Renz, Brian Kerns, Robin Saha, Steve Siebert, Alan Fugleberg Other’s Present: Students from 3X3X3 carpool program Old Business The previous meeting minutes were approved. New Business The agenda was reviewed. 1. Biomass Plant – (Cherie): Cherie updated group on upcoming public open houses, December 8 in the UC Cherie asked if the SCC would like to develop a position statement regarding the Biomass project. The consensus of the committee was that it is too soon. More information is needed, specifically the feasibility report. Brian Kerns agreed to take the lead on developing the SCC’s statement in the future. 2. Green IT (Tom Gallagher, COT): A) Green IT Concepts 1) General objectives a) Lower C footprint b) Save money 2) Strategy a) Reuse, recycle, appropriate disposal b) Reduce C footprint through reduced power (energy) use c) Return on investment through good IT policies (e.g., < energy consumption) d) Transport costs (e.g., telecommuting, distance learning, video conferencing, etc.) 3) Initiatives (primary driver has been return on investments) a) Cloud computing – consolidation of servers, data centers can move to clean energy source areas (e.g., Omaha) b) Virtualization of desktops via remote access c) Low power devices d) New technology (e.g., solid state electronic storage, low power processors, CRTLCDLED monitors) 4) Role for SCC a) Education/awareness esp. re Univ. decision-making, particular focus on additional criteria when purchasing computers (life cycle purchases) - Criteria should include (in addition to speed, power, etc.) Recycle potential Energy consumption b) IT power policies for labs and offices hibernation – behavior modification 3. Social Marketing Campaign (Darcy Klessens, Office of Sustainability Intern): Darcy presented her work on the all-dorm energy conservation competition that was held this last semester. SCC State of Sustainability Report due Earth Day, 2011 (Cherie) This report is intended to document UM’s progress to date as well as future plans and recommended actions. The report is due Earth Day (April 22). To achieve this, the SCC needs to start with a draft outline in January and decide what recommendations it will make. Cherie asked everyone on the committee to send her their ideas and she will compile in the outline for the January meeting. Possible topics include: o Green certificates for events o Green Purchasing Policy o Paper policy o Greening IT o Glass Recycling o On-campus Recycling o Transportation footprint o CAP Implememtation 6. Student Carpooling project (Students from Robin Saha’a class): (Robin, could you please send an electronic version of their presentation so I can attach?) 1) Presentation/discussion noted most effective & common ways (other universities) to encourage car-pooling a) Increase parking fees b) Introduce daily parking passes 2) Need to work with all stakeholders, particularly ASUM transport and public safety 3) Recommend greater flexibility and more marketing efforts NEXT SCC MEETING: January 3, 2010 at 11:10am – 1pm Main Hall 004 (location is tentative!!)
